IMMACULATA, Pa. – It was a high-scoring day as the Mighty Macs softball team dropped the final two games in their series against Cabrini on Tuesday. Game one reached a final score of 13-5 while game two reached a final score of 16-13.
Immaculata started off on the right foot in game one.
Sara Rode led off the top of the first for the Mighty Macs with a walk. After
Cat Knoll reached base on a single into right field,
Keani Hindle smacked a three-run home run into right field, giving Immaculata a 3-0 lead.
Cabrini responded in the bottom of the second, scoring one run following a lead-off double to cut Immaculata's lead to 3-1.
Knoll would hit a lead-off double of her own to start out the top of the third. Knoll would then be batted in on an RBI-single from Hindle.
Paige Gerst came up to the plate next and batted Hindle in on a single into center field, giving the Mighty Macs a 5-1 lead.
Cabrini rallied in the bottom of the third, stringing together a series of no-out hits to score five runs.
Laurna Heathcott prevented more runs from scoring on back-to-back ground balls to third, throwing out the runners at home each time as Cabrini took a 6-5 lead.
The Cavaliers would score two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to increase their lead to 10-5. In the bottom of the sixth, Cabrini scored three additional runs to end the game 13-5.
Knoll and Hindle went a combined 6-for-6 at the plate in game one. Each batter scored two runs while Hindle also hit a home run and two RBI.
Rode kicked off game two the same way she did game one: with a lead-off walk. Following a bunt single by
Elena Anglani, Knoll and Hindle hit back-to-back doubles. Knoll batted in Rode while Hindle batted in Anglani and Knoll. After a Gerst groundout moved Hindle to third base, Heathcott hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hindle to round out the inning for the Mighty Macs with a 4-0 lead.
Cabrini scored two runs in the bottom of the first to cut Immaculata's lead to 4-2.
The Mighty Macs responded in the top of the third, scoring three runs on the inning. Knoll hit a lead-off double to right field to kick off the inning. Then, after Knoll advanced on a wild pitch, she would score from third on a single into left field by Hindle. Gerst then slammed a two-run home run into right field, increasing the Immaculata lead to 7-2.
Rode hit a lead-off single to start the top of the fourth inning. Then with two outs, Gerst batted Rode in on a single into left field, increasing the Mighty Mac lead to 8-2.
The lead would quickly dimmish in the bottom of the fifth, however. The Cavaliers scored 12 runs in the inning, taking a 14-8 lead over the Mighty Macs.
In the top of the sixth, the Mighty Macs closed the gap.
Jess Oldham reached base on a lead-off walk and would then advance to second on an infield single from Knoll. Hindle then hit her second home run of the day, scoring three runs to cut the gap down to 14-11. Gerst would then hit a double into right field to keep the rally going. After entering as a pinch-runner,
Carly Grandizio advanced to third base when Heathcott hit in an error to second. With two runners on,
Kaitlyn Carter hit a single up the middle, scoring both Heathcott and Grandizio to cut Cabrini's lead down to one.
Cabrini scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 16-13.
Rode reached base on her third walk of the day in the top of the seventh, but the Mighty Macs could not capitalize as game two ended 16-13.
Hindle went 3-for-4 with a home run and a walk in game two, scoring three runs while batting in five.
The Mighty Macs return to action on Friday as they travel to Neumann for a double-header. Game one is scheduled to start at 3:00 P.M.
