Men's Soccer Battles to 3-3 Draw in Season Opener

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata men's soccer team returned to action on Tuesday evening to open its 2020 season against Wesley. Immaculata led for much of the contest but the game ended in a 3-3 draw following a late second-half rally from the Wolverines as Immaculata opens the year 0-0-1 while Wesley sees its record move to 1-2-1 on the year.

In the first half, Immaculata opened the scoring just over nine minutes in as Josh Fonder buried a penalty kick to give the Macs a 1-0 lead. In the 23rd minute, Immaculata doubled its lead as Chad Catalana buried a bouncing ball in the box off a shot from the corner from Carl Vicere to extend the lead to 2-0. Wesley answered back with a goal of its own in the 27th minute to make the score 2-1 heading into the halftime break.

In the 57th minute, Fonder scored his second goal of the match with a diving header in front off an assist from Joseph Duddy to give Immaculata a commanding 3-1 lead. In the 60th minute, Wesley responded with a goal of its own on thanks to a well-timed cross to trim the Macs lead to 3-2. In the 81st minute, Wesley found the equalizer as the Wolverines evened the score at 3-3. In the final nine minutes, Immaculata and Wesley each generated scoring opportunities but the Wolverine and Mighty Mac defenses were up to the task as the game ended in a 3-3 draw.

Wesley ended the game with a 20-13 edge in shots and a narrow 10-9 advantage in shots on goal. In goal, Mikey Kalpokas stood tall making seven big saves to slow the Wesley offense while Wolverine goalie Nathan White made six big stops of his own including one PK stop in the first half to limit the Immaculata offense.

Immaculata will be back in action on Saturday afternoon at Wesley with that contest set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
