Mighty Macs Power Past Wolverines; Register Sweep to Open Atlantic East Play

DOVER, Del.-On the heels of a pair of convincing wins over Wesley a day ago to begin Atlantic East play, the Immaculata baseball team took to the road on Tuesday afternoon for the final game of the three game set with the Wolverines. Immaculata raced out to a seven-run lead in the early stages of the contest and rode this early advantage to a 7-6 victory over the Wolverines to record the sweep of Wesley and open Atlantic East play a perfect 3-0.

Trevor Wagner (1-1) got the start on the mound for Immaculata and tossed six shutout innings surrendering just two hits while striking out four to earn his first victory of the young season.

After scoring 21 runs over the course of the doubleheader yesterday, Immaculata wasted little time in getting its first runs of the game on Tuesday afternoon as Josh Crowding clubbed a solo home run in the first inning to give Immaculata an early 1-0 lead. Immaculata extended its lead in the fourth inning when Steven Theisen came through with an RBI single to right center to score Isaiah Payton and extend the Macs lead to 2-0 in the middle innings.

In the top of the fifth, Joey Wright came through with a towering three-run home run, which scored Richard Fontanillas and Tyler Kmiec to give the Macs a commanding 5-0 lead over the Wolverines. In the top of the seventh, Immaculata tacked on two more runs, which would prove critical as Crowding laced an RBI double to score Kmiec before coming around to score himself on an RBI groundout off the bat of Fontanillas, which gave Immaculata a 7-0 lead.

In the home half of the seventh, Alex Singer entered in relief for Immaculata surrendering one run on one hit with one walk while also recording one out via a strikeout before exiting in favor of Max Cannon who got the final two outs of the inning surrendering just one hit in the process to send the game to the eighth with Immaculata leading 7-1.

In the eighth inning, Chris Huyette entered in relief of Cannon tossing 0.2 of an inning surrendering one hit and one unearned run before being lifted in favor of Greg Grandelli. Grnadelli surrendered four unearned runs on three hits while walking one but failed to record an out before being relieved by Ryan Crowell. With Immaculata clinging to a 7-6 lead, Crowell entered and got the final four outs for Immaculata using just 18 pitches and registering one strikeout in the process to notch his first save of the season and help Immaculata complete the three-game sweep of the Wolverines.

For Wesley, freshman Cole Edwards got the start on the mound lasting just five innings while surrendering six hits and five runs while walking eight to fall to 1-3 on the season.

Immaculata will look to continue its winning ways on Friday afternoon when it travels to Neumann for the first of a three-game Atlantic East weekend series against the Knights with first pitch in that game set for 3 p.m.
