IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Mighty Macs softball team split their doubleheader against the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins Friday night. Immaculata (4-12, 4-12) won game one 10-6 before losing game two 12-1.
Gwynedd Mercy scored three runs in the top of the first inning to start game one.
In their half of the inning, the Mighty Macs responded. After
Riece Onorato reached base on an error,
Cat Knoll smacked a home run to left-center field.
Keani Hindle and
Paige Gerst would then reach base on an error and a walk, respectively.
Laurna Heathcott batted Hindle in on a double down the left field line, moving Gerst to third base. Gerst would then score on a sacrifice fly from
Jess Oldham to give the Mighty Macs a 4-3 lead.
Gwynedd Mercy regained the lead in the top of the second, earning a 5-4 advantage.
In the bottom of the second,
Sara Rode reached on a fielder's choice before advancing to second base on an Onorato ground-out. Knoll then notched her third RBI on the day, batting Rode in on a single through the left side to tie the game up at 5-5.
The Mighty Macs took the lead in the bottom of the fourth.
Sarah Reed led off the inning with an infield single.
Alyssa Daly and
Sara Rode each singled to load up the bases. Knoll then hit a single of her own, batting in two runs while Rode advanced to third. Rode would then score on a sacrifice fly from Hindle before Knoll scored on a Gerst single to give Immaculata a 9-5 lead.
The score remained 9-5 until the bottom of the sixth when Knoll scored on a double into right-center field from
Laurna Heathcott to make the score 10-5.
Gwynedd Mercy scored one run in the top of the seventh becofre the game wrapped up in a 10-6 victory for Immaculata.
Knoll went 4-for-4 on the game for Immaculata, hitting a home run while scoring three runs and batting in five.
Gwynedd Mercy capitalized on Immaculata errors to kick off game two, scoring five unearned runs in the top of the first. They added an additional run in the top of the second, taking an early 6-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Gwynedd doubled their lead as they batted around for the second time on the game, taking a 12-0 lead.
Kayley Peugh hit a lead-off single in the bottom of the fifth as the Mighty Macs looked to gain traction. With two outs, Knoll hit a single into center field, scoring Peugh. That would be the only run the Mighty Macs scored on the inning, however, as they dropped the game 12-1.
The Mighty Macs will return to action tomorrow as they travel to Gwynedd Mercy for the second half of their series. Game one is scheduled to start at 12:00 P.M.
