SCRANTON, Pa.- The Immaculata baseball team returned to Marywood on Sunday afternoon to resume its series with the Pacers after having play suspended due to field conditions at Marywood on Saturday afternoon. Despite trailing in both games, Immaculata was able to rally and defeat Marywood by a final of 4-3 in game one and 12-5 in game two to remain perfect in Atlantic East play.
With the game one victory, head coach
Kevin Schneider passed former coach Bryan Torresani to become the winningest coach in Immaculata baseball program history as he registered his 79
th and 80
th career victories on Sunday afternoon. This sweep of the Pacers also extended the Macs winning streak to 13 games in a row, which is now tied for the longest winning streak in program history. The previous record was set during the 2011 season when Immaculata won 13 in a row from 3/30/11 to 4/26/11.
Game One: Immaculata 4 Marywood 3
In the first game of the twinbill, Marywood jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of first-inning runs. Immaculata countered with a run of its own in the top of the second thanks to an RBI single from
Joey Sacco, which scored
RJ Mason to cut the deficit to 2-1 and keep the bases loaded for the Macs. Following this, play on Saturday afternoon was suspended due to field conditions, thus, forcing Immaculata and Marywood to wait until Sunday to resume play.
On Sunday afternoon, Mason delivered an RBI triple in the third inning, which scored
Joey Wright and
Richard Fontanillas to give the Macs a slim 3-2 lead. Marywood responded with a sac fly during the home half of the third, which evened the score at 3-3 heading to the fourth.
After a scoreless fourth inning,
Isaiah Payton delivered a solo home run to center field, which gave the Macs back the lead, making the score 4-3 in favor of Immaculata.
In the home half of the seventh, Marywood threatened as the Pacers loaded the bases with two outs but
Greg Grandelli who had entered for the seventh inning was able to get the final out via a groundout back to the mound to secure the 4-3 victory.
Mason Keller got the start on the mound for Immaculata on Saturday, pitching the first inning surrendering two runs on two hits before play was suspended. Once play resumed,
Ray Lutick (2-0) took the ball for the Macs tossing five innings scattering three hits and one run while striking out seven to earn his second victory of the season. Grandelli, entered in relief of Lutick and was able to nail down the save following a scoreless seventh inning, which saw him record one strikeout in his inning of work for his second save of the year.
Game Two: Immaculata 12 Marywood 5
In the second game of the afternoon, Immaculata got on the board early as
Tyler Kmiec executed a successful steal of home to give Immaculata a 1-0 lead after the first inning of play.
Marywood countered with a run of its own in the second before scoring three more in the third to take a 4-1 lead into the fourth inning.
Following a scoreless fourth inning, Immaculata countered with five runs of its own in the top of the fifth to reclaim a 6-4 lead. Immaculata started its fifth-inning rally with
Frank Margiotta scoring via a wild pitch before
Josh Crowding delivered a two-run home run to left field, which also scored Sacco and allowed the Macs to even the score at 4-4 with just one out in the inning. After loading the bases, Mason delivered an RBI single to center, which scored Fontanillas to give Immaculata the lead once more making the score 5-4 in favor of the Macs. Immaculata added another run via an RBI single off the bat of
Steven Theisen, which scored
Joey Wright as the Macs extended their lead to 6-4.
Trevor Wagner got the start on the mound lasting just three innings surrendering four runs on six hits while striking out four before exiting in favor of
Michael Gama. Gama, entered and tossed 1.1 scoreless innings while walking four and striking out a pair.
Chris Huyette (1-0) entered in relief of Gama with one out during the bottom of the fifth and ended the inning with a strikeout and a popup to second base to take the game to the sixth inning with Immaculata still ahead by two (6-4).
In the sixth inning, Fontanillas added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run home run to left center, which also scored Kmiec who had reached via a hit by pitch earlier in the inning, making the score 8-4 in favor of the Macs. Huyette remained in for the sixth, surrendering one hit and one walk while striking out a pair of help keep the Pacers offense off the scoreboard.
In the top of the seventh, Immaculata added another run via an RBI single from Sacco, which scored Margiotta to give the Macs a 9-4 lead. Marywood countered with a run of its own during the home half to the make the score 9-5 heading into the eighth inning. Â
Derek Andrada entered in relief of Huyette for the seventh, surrendering one run on one hit over the course of his inning of work.
In the eighth, Theisen worked a bases loaded walk to score Fontanillas before Margiotta delivered a sacrifice fly to center to score Wright and extend the Macs lead to 11-5 heading to the bottom of the ninth. Louis Flores entered in relief of Huyette for the eighth, working a scoreless inning while allowing just one hit and striking out one to send the game to the ninth with the score locked at 11-5.
In the top of the ninth, Immaculata added another run via a Fontanillas sacrifice fly to further extend the lead, making the score 12-5. In the home half of the ninth,
Max Cannon entered in relief of Flores for the ninth and tossed a scoreless inning with a pair of strikeouts to close out the Macs victory and give the team its third Atlantic East sweep in a row.
Immaculata will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon at home against Cabrini with that contest set to begin at 3 p.m.
