IMMACULATA, Pa.- In search of its 14
th victory in as many tries to set a new program win-streak record, the Immaculata baseball team returned to the field on Tuesday afternoon to face Cabrini in an Atlantic East clash. Immaculata got on the board early via a
Josh Crowding home run and never looked back en route to an 8-3 victory over Cabrini.
Mason Keller got the start on the mound for Immaculata going six innings scattering three runs on six hits with three walks while striking out four to improve to 5-0 on the year.
In the top of the first, Cabrini threatened as its first two batters of the game reached but Keller was able to work out of trouble after getting a perfect double-play ball up the middle and a foul pop to end the threat.
In the home half of the first,
Joey Sacco led off the game with a hit by pitch, which allowed him to come around and score on a two-run blast to left field off the bat of
Josh Crowding to give the Macs an early 2-0 lead heading into the second inning.
In the second inning, Immaculata doubled its lead as Sacco laced an RBI single into left, which scored
RJ Mason to extend the lead to 3-0.
Frank Margiotta also found his way around to score on this play after Sacco got into a rundown between first and second, which further extended the Macs lead to 4-0.
In the top of the third, Cabrini cut into the Immaculata lead as the Cavaliers scored a pair of runs to make the score 4-2 heading to the bottom of the third.
In the top of the seventh, Cabrini added another run via a solo home run to left center, which cut the Macs lead to 4-3. Following this,
Max Cannon entered in relief of Keller and got two outs while allowing one hit before exiting in favor of
Chris Huyette. Huyette got the final out of the inning on a fielders choice to send the game to the home half of the seventh with Immaculata holding on to a 4-3 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Huyette got the first out of the inning before exiting in favor of
Ryan Crowell who entered and struck out the first two batters he faced to send the game to the home half of the eighth with Immaculata holding on to a 4-3 advantage.
In the home half of the eighth, Immaculata saw its first two batters of the inning reach, which closed the book on Cabrini starter Nicholas Gares who lasted seven innings surrendering six runs and four earned on four hits and three walks while striking out five in the loss.
Against the Cabrini reliever (Jonathan Baker), Immaculata was able to add to its lead via an RBI single from
Joey Wright, which plated Sacco and gave Immaculata a 5-3 lead. Immaculata added two more after a wild pickoff attempt to third went into the Immaculata dugout, which gave the Macs a 7-3 lead. Wright came around to score on a sac fly off the bat of Payton, which gave the Macs a 8-3 lead heading to the top of the ninth.
In the ninth, Crowell remained in the game for Immaculata and after surrendering a leadoff single struck out the next two before getting a foul popup to
Frank Margiotta to record his second save of the Spring and give Immaculata its record-setting 14
th win in a row.
Immaculata will be back in action on Friday afternoon at home against Gwynedd Mercy in the first of a three-game set with the Griffins beginning at 3 p.m.
