Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to Montclair State

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata women's lacrosse team (0-1) opened its season on Saturday afternoon against non-conference foe Montclair State (1-0). Immaculata opened the scoring in the early moments of the game but Montclair State used a big run midway through the first half, to earn a 17-4 victory over the Mighty Macs.

Immaculata opened the scoring just over a minute into the contest as freshman Tessa Liberatoscioli found the back of the net on a free-position attempt to give the Macs the early 1-0 lead. Montclair State responded with a 5-0 run over the course of the next 14 minutes to claim a 5-1 lead midway through the first half.

With 12:11 to play in the opening half, Kaitlyn Klitchko scored her first collegiate goal on a free-position attempt, which snapped the run and brought the score to 5-2 in favor of the Redhawks.

Immaculata and Montclair State traded goals over the course of the next two minutes with Maura Murray scoring her first goal of the season on an assist from Klitchko to make the score 6-3 with 11:17 to play. Montclair State ended the first half on a 5-0 run to carry an 11-3 lead into the second half.

In the second half, Montclair Stare registered the first eight goals of the half to extend its lead to 17-3. Liberatoscioli found the back of the net for the second time on the afternoon with 7:43 to play on her second free-position goal of the contest. The final seven minutes of the contest went scoreless as each defense stiffened as Montclair State earned the victory by a final of 17-4.

Montclair State ended the day with a 35-10 edge in shots and a 19-4 advantage in draw controls. Montclair State was also nearly perfect on its clear attempts on the afternoon successfully converting 13-of-14 attempts.

Junior Katie Mulvey made her goalie debut for the Mighty Macs making nine big stops to limit the Montclair State offense. Molly Gallagher turned in a strong defensive performance causing five turnovers while also scooping up five ground balls to help key the Mighty Mac defensive unit.

Immaculata will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at Lancaster Bible in the second of its three non-conference games on the year.
