IMMACULATA, Pa.-Seeking to avenge a heartbreaking loss at Gwynedd Mercy on Thursday night, the Immaculata women's basketball team returned to action on Friday evening against the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins in what would be the Mighty Macs season finale. Immaculata battled throughout the game, but a late first-quarter run by the Griffins gave the visitors a lead they would never relinquish in the 80-73 victory on Friday evening.
Prior to the opening tip, Immaculata honored its four-member senior class of
Emily Halloran,
Theresa Kearney,
Lauren Carrafa, and
Kate Lafferty.
Immaculata and Gwynedd Mercy traded baskets through the early, going to make the score 5-4 with just over six minutes to play in the opening quarter. Gwynedd Mercy closed the first quarter on an 18-10 run, which gave the Griffins a 23-15 lead heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Immaculata and Gwynedd Mercy continued to trade baskets for much of the quarter as the Griffins looked to maintain their lead. Immaculata had a 6-0 scoring run near the end of the second quarter, which trimmed the deficit to 40-30 with 12 seconds to play before Gwynedd Mercy hit a three-pointer to close the half to stretch the lead back to 13, making the score 43-30 at the halftime break.
In the third period, Immaculata opened the quarter on an 11-6 run to trim the deficit back to 49-41, with 6:12 remaining in the quarter. Following a Gwynedd Mercy timeout, the Griffins briefly extended their lead, but Immaculata was able to battle back in the closing stages of the third quarter, making the score 63-56 heading to the fourth and final quarter of play.
Immaculata opened the fourth quarter on a 4-0 run, which cut the deficit to just three points with 9:07 to play, but Gwynedd Mercy was able to go on a 5-0 run of its own to restore an eight-point lead. In the final moments of regulation, Immaculata continued to battle, trimming the deficit to as few as four (77-73) with just 39 seconds to play in regulation following a made free throw by
Erin Kelly. Gwynedd Mercy held on to its lead in the closing seconds to earn the 80-73 victory over Immaculata on Friday evening.
Theresa Kearney was exceptional for the Mighty Macs on Friday evening, pouring in a game and career-high 35 points while also coming away with 10 rebounds to register her first double-double of the season. Fellow senior
Emily Halloran narrowly missed a double-figure scoring performance of her own, ending with nine points on 4-of-8 shooting from the field.
Gwynedd Mercy utilized a balanced attack throughout the evening led by a 13-point effort from Haley Crossley and an 11-point showing from Elise Sylvester as the other Griffin in double figures at the conclusion of the contest.
As a team, Immaculata shot 34.2 % from the field while also shooting 24.1 % from three-point land and 66.7 % from the charity stripe. Immaculata was narrowly outrebounded once again on Friday evening by a 52-47 margin due to a 37-28 rebounding deficit on the defensive glass.
