Men's Volleyball Falls to Rutgers-Newark in Regular Season Finale

 NEWARK, N.J.-The Immaculata men's volleyball team took to the road on Saturday afternoon for its regular-season finale against perennial-power Rutgers Newark. In the first match of the afternoon, Immaculata battled throughout but fell to Rutgers-Newark by a final of 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-12) in the first match and 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-12) in the second match.

In the first set of the afternoon, Immaculata and Rutgers-Newark traded points through the early going before Newark surged to claim a 12-4 lead midway through the set. Immaculata battled from this point but Rutgers-Newark was able to hold on for a 25-18 first set victory to claim a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, Rutgers-Newark jumped out to a 9-2 lead, which proved to be enough to allow the Scarlet Raiders to take a 25-11 second set victory and 2-0 lead in the match.

During the third set, Rutgers-Newark used another early run to claim a 10-3 lead near the midpoint of the set, which enabled the Scarlet Raiders to roll to the 25-12 third set victory and take the first match of the afternoon by a final of 3-0.

Joe Martell led Immaculata in kills and assists in the first game with four and six, respectively while Bryce Wiltbank posted a team-best six digs. Jack Debes ended the first match leading the team in blocks with three rejections over the course of the afternoon.

In the second match of the afternoon, Immaculata and Rutgers-Newark once again traded points throughout much of the early going as the match was tight with the score at 9-7 near the midway point of the set. Rutgers-Newark closed the set on a 16-5 run to claim the first set by a final of 25-12 and a 1-0 lead in the second match.

In the second set, Rutgers-Newark again jumped out to an early lead claiming a 20-10 advantage late in the set. The Scarlet Raiders used this commanding lead to roll to a 25-11 second set victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, Rutgers Newark jumped out to an early lead once again taking a 9-3 advantage in the early going. Rutgers-Newark used this early advantage to roll to a 25-12 third-set victory and 3-0 victory in the match.

Garrett Pepper ended the second match as the team leader in kills with five while Martell logged a team-best eight assists with John Bohrer leading the team in digs with five in the setback.
