Softball Drops Senior Day Doubleheader vs Wesley

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata softball team made its long awaited return to the field on Friday afternoon vs Wesley in a doubleheader, which was also senior day for the Mighty Macs. Immaculata battled throughout the afternoon but dropped both ends of the doubleheader 11-2 in game one and 12-4 in game two to open the season with a record of 0-2.

Prior to the first pitch, Immaculata honored its four seniors in Keani Hindle, Sarah Reed, Renee Deangelis, and Paige Gerst in recognition of their efforts throughout their four year careers as Mighty Macs.
Wesley opened the scoring with a pair of four-run innings in the first and second innings of play to claim an early 8-0 lead. The Wolverines extended their lead during the top of the third adding another three runs to extend the lead to 11-0 in the early stages of the contest.

In the home half of the third, Immaculata countered with an RBI double to left center off the bat of Sara Rode following an infield single from Katy Newton earlier in the inning. Immaculata continued to threaten in the inning but the Wolverines tight-roped out of danger to preserve an 11-1 lead heading to the fourth inning.

In the home half of the fourth, Immaculata added another run via an RBI single from Hayley Evans, which plated Maggie Wilkinson to trim the deficit to 11-2, which the Macs would go on to fall by.

In the circle, senior DeAngelis got the start for Immaculata going 2.0 innings surrendering eight runs on 10 hits in the season opening loss. Kayley Peugh made her Mighty Mac debut in the circle in relief of DeAngelis tossing 2.0 innings of her own scattering four hits and three runs over the course of her work. Freshman Kristin Carter made her collegiate debut in the fifth and final inning tossing a scoreless seven-pitch inning.

Dori Loukopolos got the start in the circle for Wesley and turned in a gem going four innings scattering just five hits and two runs while striking out seven to earn the victory. Abbey Mayse entered in relief of Loukopolos tossing a shutout fifth inning with one strikeout to finish out the game one victory for Wesley.

In the second game, Wesley jumped out to an early 3-0 lead once again with a three-run first inning to claim an early lead. In the home half of the first, Immaculata threatened as it loaded the bases with just one out but Wesley again tight-roped out of danger to preserve its 3-0 lead heading to the second inning of play.

In the second inning, Wesley extended its lead with a solo home run to start the inning, which gave the Wolverines a 4-0 lead. Wesley added another run via another solo shot to open the third inning, which extended the Wolverines lead to 5-0.

In the home half of the third, Immaculata loaded the bases with just one out in the inning, which allowed the Macs to score their first run of the game thanks to a walk by Hindle, which also closed the book on Wesley starter Shanyn Burch. Burch ended her afternoon with a final line of 2.1 innings pitched surrendering four runs (two earned). Jess Oldham greeted the new Wesley pitcher with a hard hit single through the left side, which plated Rode to trim the deficit to 5-2. Immaculata continued to trim the deficit following an RBI walk from Evans to plate Cat Knoll, thus, making the score 5-3. A fielder's choice of the bat of freshman Cynthia Gordon scored Hindle, which made the score 5-4 heading to the fourth inning.

In the top of the fourth, Wesley regained a four-run lead following a three-run home run to straight away centerfield to give the Wolverines an 8-4 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth. In the sixth inning, Wesley tacked on another four runs to take a 12-4 lead heading to the home half of the sixth.

In the home half of the sixth, Immaculata threatened but was unable to push across the run needed to extend the game, as the Macs dropped the second game by a final of 12-4.

Sarah Guido got the start for Immaculata in the circle for game two of the doubleheader going 3.1 innings surrendering seven runs on 10 hits while striking out one. Carter entered in relief once again tossing two innings scattering five hits and five runs before exiting in favor of Peugh who finished out the game registering the final two outs while surrendering just one hit in the setback.

For Wesley, Abbey Mayse earned the victory in the circle after entering in relief of Burch tossing 3.2 scoreless innings scattering just one hit and two walks while striking out one in the victory.

Immaculata will be back in action at Wesley tomorrow afternoon with that doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
