IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata men's volleyball team remained home on Saturday morning for a CVC matchup against a nationally-ranked foe in #5 Rutgers-Newark. Immaculata battled throughout the afternoon but Rutgers-Newark emerged victorious capturing both ends of the doubleheader by 3-0 margins.
After trading points through the first eight points with the score locked at 4-4, Rutgers-Newark went on a 7-1 run to claim an 11-5 lead in the first set, which prompted an Immaculata timeout. Following this timeout, Rutgers-Newark continued its strong first set outscoring the Macs by an 8-4 margin to claim a 19-9 lead late in the opening set. Newark rode this late lead to a 25-9 first set victory over the Mighty Macs.
In the second set, Rutgers-Newark opened play with a strong run once again claiming an 11-4 lead in the early going of the set, which prompted an Immaculata timeout. Following the timeout, Rutgers-Newark continued its strong play to earn the 25-6 second set victory and claim a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third remained close for much of the early going as the score was 14-11 narrowly in favor of Rutgers Newark at the midway point of the set. This is as close as the Macs would get as the Scarlet Raiders closed on a 11-1 run to claim the third set by a final of 25-12, which also gave them the 3-0 match victory.
In the opening match,
John Bohrer logged a team-best best four kills while
Garrett Pepper registered a pair of kills of his own. Freshman
Joe Martell ended the match with the team lead in both assists (7) and digs (3).
In the first set of the second match, Rutgers-Newark raced out to an early 14-4 lead, which allowed them to take the opening set by a final of 25-9 to claim an early 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, Rutgers-Newark used another mid-set run to register a 25-12 set victory and claim a 2-0 lead in the second match.
In the third set, Immaculata jumped out to an early 7-5 lead before Rutgers-Newark responded with 10-1 run to claim a 15-8 lead at the midpoint of the set. Following this run, Newark held the Macs to just two points for the remainder of the set to register a 25-10 third-set victory and take the second match by a final of 3-0.
In the second match,
RJ Ubowski led the Macs in kills with four while Martell logged eight assists and Pepper registered nine digs to lead the Macs in those two categories.
Immaculata will be back in action on Wednesday evening in its final non-conference match of the year of against Cairn with that match set to begin at 7 p.m.
