Baseball Edges Dominican; 2-1

FORT PIERCE, Fl.- One day after an offensive explosion that saw Immaculata defeat University of Northwestern by a final of 17-2, the Immaculata baseball team returned to action on Sunday afternoon to face off against Dominican University. Immaculata and Dominican engaged in a low-scoring affair as the two combined for just three runs with Immaculata emerging victorious by a final of 2-1.

In the third inning, Immaculata opened the scoring when Stephen Trendler crossed the plate on a throwing error by the shortstop, which gave the Macs an early 1-0 lead. This lead held up until the sixth inning when Dominican responded with an RBI walk to even the contest at 1-1 heading to the home half of the sixth inning.

In the home half of the sixth, Richard Fontanillas worked a two-out walk before coming around to score on an RBI double to center off the bat of Josh Crowding, which restored the Macs lead making the score 2-1. Crowding attempted to score on a single to left off the bat of Trevor Wagner but was out at the plate following a strong relay throw from the third baseman to send the game to the seventh with Immaculata leading 2-1.

Over the final three innings, Dominican managed just one hit and four base runners as Mason Keller earned the victory with 3.1 solid innings of one-hit baseball while striking out six including two of the final three outs in the ninth inning.

Ryan Crowell got the start for the Macs this afternoon and tossed five innings scattering just four hits and one run while striking out a pair before exiting in favor of Stephen DiBatista. DiBatista managed to record a pair of outs in the sixth inning as he struck out a pair of batters while allowing just one walk before exiting in favor of Keller who finished out the contest for the Macs.

Crowding delivered the biggest hit of the afternoon for the Macs with his ringing RBI double as one of just three Mighty Macs to record a hit in the victory on Sunday afternoon.

Immaculata will now shift its attention to North Central University on Monday afternoon with that contest set to begin at 12:30 p.m. as the Macs look to run their winning streak to three games.
