Softball Earns Split to Open Season

CHESTERTOWN, Md.- Immaculata opened up the 2020 season on the road to face Washington College on Wednesday. The Mighty Macs dropped game one 5-1, but earned the split with a 3-1 victory in game two.

Abigail Carter went 4-for-6 on the afternoon while Emily Mesey registered three hits in the double header and drove in two of the four runs on the day. Renee DeAngelis fired a gem in game two by throwing a six-inning complete game, allowing six hits and one run in the win.

Game 1

The Mighty Macs had the first scoring opportunity in the top of the fourth. Mesey led off the inning with a walk while Sara Rode singled to put runners on first and second to start the frame. Washington College starter Avery Byrnes got out of the jam with three straight punch outs to end the threat.

The Shorewomen broke through in the bottom half of the inning to get a lead. Megan Robbins delivered the big blow with a three-run homerun, giving Washington College a 3-0 lead after four innings.

The Mighty Macs stranded two more runners in the top of the fifth and left the door open for the home team to extend the lead. The Shorewomen greeted new pitcher Sarah Guido with two straight singles to create the next threat. Following a fielder's choice, Lexie Witmer doubled to right field to score two runs, making it 5-0 at the end of the fifth.

Immaculata scratched a run across in the seventh inning with an RBI single, but that is all the Mighty Macs could produce in game one against Avery Byrnes. Byrnes went the distance and recorded 14 punch outs while scattering six hits.

Michaela Petito suffered the loss by allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five batters. Carter went 2-for-4 in the opener while Mesey went 2-for-3 and was the lone Mighty Mac to not go down on strikes in the first game.

Game 2

Immaculata used the momentum from the last inning of game one to reverse fortunes in backend of the double header. The Mighty Macs used three straight hits to get an early 2-0 lead. Carter and Rode started things off with two straight singles and advanced a base to set up runners on second and third for Mesey. The Senior delivered with an RBI single for the 1-0 lead. Mesey then swiped second, allowing Rode to score as Immaculata led 2-0 after the first.

Immaculata added one more run in the fifth off an RBI double by Paige Gerst. Renee DeAngelis continued to stymie the Shorewowmen in the circle and limited them to three hits heading into the final inning.

DeAngelis ran into some trouble in the bottom of the sixth by issuing a free pass and a base hit to start the frame. She used a huge defensive play from Gerst as she stepped on the first following a ground ball and fired it to second for a double play. The Shorewomen battled to score a run on a single, but DeAngelis induced a popup with runners on second and third to end the game.

Carter and Rode fueled the Macs from the top of the lineup and combined to go 5-for-6 and scored two of the teams three runs.

Immaculata now turns its attention to the spring break trip and will play Keystone and Penn College on Monday from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
