WINCHESTER, Va.- One week after registering a split with Rutgers-Camden in a home doubleheader, Immaculata took to the road for a Sunday doubleheader opposite nationally-ranked Shenandoah. Immaculata battled in both contests dropping the first game 14-13 in extra innings before capturing game two by a final of 9-1.
In the first game of the afternoon,
Ryan Crowell got the start for Immaculata and he lasted just 3.1 surrendering nine hits and six runs to the high-powered Hornet offense. Immaculata responded with six runs of its own during the fifth inning courtesy of a pair of RBI singles from Matt Headley and
Josh Crowding along with a three-RBI double from
Richard Fontanillas and a bases-loaded walk from
Isaiah Payton to even the score at 6-6. Shehandoah and Immaculata would trade runs over the next two innings as the host Hornets scored five runs between the sixth and seventh innings while Immaculata scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning courtesy of a SAC Fly from Fontanillas and another RBI single from Crowding to trail 11-8 heading to the eighth inning.
During the eight inning of baseball,
Stephen Trendler registered a SAC Fly of his own to make the score 11-9 heading to the ninth inning of play. In the top of the ninth, Fontanillas opened the scoring with a solo home run before
Tim Dougherty Jr. registered an RBI single to even the score at 11-11.
Coy Walters came through for Immaculata moments later with a towering two-run home run to give Immaculata its first lead of the afternoon heading to the bottom of the ninth. In the ninth inning, Shenandoah capitalized on a defensive miscue to score the tying run and send the game into extra innings where the Hornets would prevail by a final of 14-13 in 12 innings.
Trevor Wagner was the tough-luck loser in this contest as he tossed 3.1 innings scattering four hits and just two earned runs while striking out a team-high four batters to suffer his second loss of the 2019-20 campaign.

Anthony Yarson and
Luis Flores all entered in relief for Immaculata in this contest with Huyette and Flores holding the distinctions of working scoreless innings in relief for Immaculata in the setback.
In the second game of the evening, Immaculata rolled to a 9-1 victory over its nationally-ranked foes behind strong pitching performances from
Billy Manzo and
Gabe Hollenbach.
In the top of the first, Crowding got things rolling for Immaculata with another SAC Fly this time plating Dominic Dellabarba to stake the Macs to an early 1-0 lead. Fontanillas added another run to the Macs lead with a solo shot during the third inning of play to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Macs.
Shenandoah answered back with an RBI double during the fourth inning before Payton worked a bases loaded walk in the sixth to give the Macs a 3-1 lead midway through the contest. In the eighth inning, Immaculata tacked on four insurance runs thanks to another solo home run from Fontanillas along with a two-RBI double from Payton and eventually a successful steal of home from Payton on a double steal to give the Macs a commanding 7-1 lead heading to the bottom of the eighth.
Payton and the Mighty Mac offense were far from finished as the Macs tacked on two more runs courtesy of another two-RBI double from Payton in the top of the ninth to claim a commanding 9-1 lead heading to the home half of the ninth inning.
In the last of the ninth, Shenandoah attempted to mount a two-out rally following a single and a hit by pitch but Hollenbach managed to force the Hornets leadoff hitter to fly out to right field to end the threat and give the Macs the 9-1 game two victory.
On the mound, Manzo was sharp once again going 4.1 innings scattering just three hits and one run while striking out three before exiting in favor of Hollenbach who tossed 4.2 shutout innings allowing just two hits while striking out a pair of batters to earn the victory in relief.
Immaculata will be back in action on Wednesday against former league rival and regional power Keystone before hosting another regional power in Rowan on Thursday afternoon in a pair of big home games for the Mighty Macs this upcoming week.
