DOVER, Del.- Following a comeback victory over Cabrini in the Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening, the Immaculata men's basketball team returned to the Atlantic East semifinals to take on top-seed Wesley in the Atlantic East semifinals battling for a spot in the Atlantic East Championship game. Despite remaining close throughout and pulling back within just four points in the closing moments of regulation, Immaculata fell to Wesley by a final score of 85-75 to bring the 2019-20 season to its conclusion.
Immaculata and Wesley traded baskets throughout the opening half of basketball but a late run by the host Wolverines gave Wesley a slim 44-36 lead heading into the halftime break.
Brian Cameron led Wesley in scoring in the first half with a 15-point opening half while also registering seven rebounds in the opening 20 minutes of basketball. Tillery led Immaculata through the opening 20 minutes with 11 points while
Steven Dao registered three rebounds to lead the Macs in the opening half.
In the first five minutes of the second half, Wesley opened with a 16-10 run thanks in large part to 10 points in the opening five minutes from Cameron to claim a 60-46 lead early in the second half of play.
Immaculata countered with a 15-4 run to trim the deficit to 64-61 with 11:26 to play in the second half of basketball. Following this run, Wesley countered with a strong four-minute run of its own claiming a 72-65 lead over Immaculata with 8:21 to play in the second half.
The teams continued to trade baskets down the stretch as Immaculata once again closed the deficit to just four points (79-75) with 2:41 to play in regulation. In the final moments of regulation, Wesley came up big on the offensive glass and knocked down late free throws to earn the 85-75 victory over Immaculata on Thursday evening, thus, bringing the Macs impressive 2019-20 season to its conclusion.
Tillery and
Brandon McCullough tied for the lead in scoring for the Macs with 16-points each while
Asa Kitchen and
Jordan Ambrose each finished with 10 points of their own.
As a team, Immaculata shot 44.3 % from the field and 26.7 % from beyond the arc while also shooting 65.4 % from the charity stripe in the setback. Wesley also ended the contest with a slim +8 (47-39) edge in rebounding over the visiting Mighty Macs.
