GLENSIDE, Pa.-Under the tutelage of first year head coach
George Dick, the Immaculata women's lacrosse team opened its 2020 season on the road at non-conference foe Arcadia. Despite remaining close throughout the first half of play, Arcadia prevailed by a final score of 12-4.
Layne Kennedy was exceptional for Immaculata this afternoon registering a hat trick while also adding an assist in the setback while
Mary McKinney added a goal of her own and
Maura Murray, and
Kayla Cadden both added assists. In her first game of the 2020 season,
Emily Schumann played well between the pipes making nine big saves to keep Immaculata in the game throughout the contest.
Arcadia opened the scoring just moments into the first half to claim the early 1-0 lead before
Layne Kennedy answered back with one of her three first half goals off an assist from
Maura Murray. Immaculata and Arcadia would trade goals as Kennedy struck again off an assist from Cadden with 14:50 to play in the first half to give Immaculata its first and only lead of the game. Arcadia answered back moments later with a goal of its own to start a 5-0 run for the Knights. Kennedy struck once more with 2:31 to play in the first half to make the score 6-3 while also etching her name further into Immaculata history becoming the all-time scoring leader with her 233rd career-point as a Mighty Mac.
In the second half, Arcadia scored the first four goals of the half in what was a low-scoring half of action highlighted by strong defensive efforts from both sides as
Emily Schumann recorded six of her nine saves in the second half while the Arcadia goalie made four of her seven stops in the second stanza as well. With 5:01 to play in regulation, Kennedy assumed the role of facilitator with a well-timed feed to a cutting
Mary McKinney, which found the back of the net to make the score 12-4 in favor of the Knights in the waning moments of regulation.
Arcadia ended the contest with a 27-14 edge in shots along with a 21-11 advantage in shots on goal. Arcadia also ended the contest with edges in the turnover battle (25-30) and draw controls (11-7), however, Immaculata did end the game with a 23-19 edge in ground balls behind a seven ground-ball effort from Schumann. On clear attempts, Immaculata was successful in 18 of its 29 attempts while the Knights were successful in 16 of their 23 chances in the season-opening victory over the Mighty Macs.
Immaculata will be back in action next Tuesday afternoon in its home opener vs Susquehanna with that contest set to begin at 4 pm.
