IMMACULATA, PA- Immaculata used a suffocating defense to beat Penn State Brandywine 67-40 on Monday evening. The win concludes the non-conference slate for the season as the Macs (6-7) open up Atlantic East Conference play on Wednesday night.
The 40 points allowed was the second lowest on the season. The Mighty Macs held Cairn to only 39 points on its win on November 20th. Theresa Kearney led the team with 21 points while Jordan Rook scored a career-high 18 points and connected on four three-pointers. Brielle Rigo was two points shy of a double-double with eight points but pulled down a career-best 18 rebounds.
Immaculata made six of its first 10 shots from the floor which sparked a 18-2 run in the opening quarter.
Theresa Kearney nearly outscored the visitors in the opening frame as she scored six while Immaculata held a 19-7 advantage after the first 10 minutes.
PSU Brandywine made the first basket of the second quarter but Immaculata responded with a 10-0 run to continue its dominance. Rook led the spurt with a pair of threes as Kearney and Rigo connected on layups for the Macs.
Immaculata took a 31-15 lead at the break as they dominated the paint. Immaculata had 16 points in the paint and scored nine points in transition. The Macs held the Nittany Lions to 5-for-33 (15%) in the opening half for the 16-point lead at intermission.
The Macs had another hot start to a half and jumped out to a 10-2 run, extending its lead to 40-17 at the seven minute mark of the third quarter. The Macs would go on a 13-0 run from the final minutes of the third into the early parts of the fourth quarter for a 36-point lead, its largest of the game.
Penn State Brandywine was able to score 13 points in the final quarter but Immaculata had a comfortable cushion as it won 67-40. Nikki Velez scored 12 points in the loss for PSU Brandywine (8-4). Immaculata held a 57-42 edge in rebounding and limited the Nittany Lions to 21-percent shooting from the field. Immaculata also limited the visitors to zero three pointers in the second half.
Immaculata returns home to face Marywood on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in its conference opener.
