IMMACULATA, Pa.- Looking to rebound off a hard-fought loss at Marymount on Wednesday evening, the Immaculata women's basketball team returned home to face Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday afternoon. In a contest that was a high-scoring affair throughout, Gwynedd Mercy used a 32-point third quarter to earn the 100-85 victory over Immaculata on Saturday afternoon.
Despite a pair of 20-point performances from
Jordan Rook and
Theresa Kearney who ended with 23 and 22 points, respectively Immaculata was unable to emerge victorious in the high-scoring Atlantic East battle.
In the first quarter of play, Immaculata and Gwynedd Mercy opened the frame trading baskets before the Griffins managed to get on a late run to claim a 28-16 lead heading to the second quarter.
During the second quarter, Immaculata rebounded nicely outscoring its guests 27-27 during the second period of play, which allowed the Macs to trim the deficit to just two points (45-43) heading to the halftime break.
In the first half,
Theresa Kearney had a huge half as she scored 18 points while
Jordan Rook added 11 points of her own to help keep the Macs in the game throughout the opening half of basketball. As a team, Immaculata shot 48.5 % from the field and 25.0 % from deep while shooting an impressive 90.0 % from the free throw line.
In the third quarter, Immaculata started strong and claimed a slim lead for just the second time in the game before Gwynedd Mercy got on another run to end the third period of play outscoring its hosts 32-27 to carry a 77-70 lead into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was tight throughout, however, Gwynedd Mercy once again outscored Immaculata by eight points to earn the 100-85 victory over the Macs on Saturday afternoon.
Rook and
Brielle Rigo each ended the game with double-doubles as Rook added 14 rebounds to her 23 points while Rigo came away with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
As a team, Immaculata shot just 47.5 % from the field and 25.0 % from three-point range while also going 73.3 % from the charity stripe in the setback.
Immaculata did manage to end the contest with a 64-48edge in rebounding thanks in large part to a 49-21 advantage on the defensive glass. However, Gwynedd Mercy won the turnover battle as the Griffins forced 43 turnovers while committing just 11 turnovers of their own.
For Gwynedd Mercy, Sydney Thompson ended the contest as the teams leading scorer with 20 points while Haley Crossley added 15 of her own as two of four Griffins in double figures.
Immaculata will be back in action on Wednesday evening opposite Cabrini with that contest set to begin at 6 p.m. inside Alumnae Hall.
