Field Hockey Edged by Eastern

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata University field hockey squad (0-2) returned to action on Monday afternoon opposite another talented non-conference foe in the Eastern University Eagles (2-0). After an almost 30-minute lightning delay, the two sides competed well but for the second game in a row it was early offense for the Eagles that enabled the visitors to earn the 2-0 victory over the Macs this afternoon.

How it Happened:
  • In the first quarter of play, Eastern opened the scoring with a goal from Abby Geisler just two minutes into the game to claim an early 1-0 lead.
  • Immaculata threatened over the course of the next six minutes before thunderstorms moved into the area and forced the game to be delayed until the storms cleared the area. After approximately 30 minutes, the storms cleared through and play resumed in the first quarter. Each side had its chances during the balance of the opening quarter but neither side was able to capitalize to keep the score locked at 1-0 heading to the second quarter of play.
  • In the 20th minute of regulation, Immaculata drew a penalty stroke but the Macs were unable to capitalize as the Eastern goalie made an impressive kick save to keep the Macs off the scoreboard, thus, sending the game to the half with Immaculata trailing 1-0.
  • In the third quarter, Immaculata had a golden opportunity off a penalty corner as Layne Kennedy had a shot from the middle but another great play by the Eastern goalkeeper kept the Macs off the scoreboard, which sent the game to the fourth quarter with the score still set at 1-0 in favor of the visiting Eagles.
  • In the fourth quarter, Eastern struck again just over a minute into the final frame off a loose ball in front to extend its lead to 2-0.
  • In the closing minutes of regulation, Immaculata continued to threaten as they got the ball deep into the Eastern zone on numerous occasions but the Eastern defense led by freshman goalkeeper Kylie Troyer was up to the task of holding the dangerous Immaculata offense scoreless to earn the 2-0 victory.
  • Randie Kuhar also played well between the pipes for Immaculata making seven huge saves for Immaculata to limit the powerful Eastern offense and keep the Mighty Macs in the game throughout.
Inside the Box Score:
  • Eastern ended the contest with a slight 13-8 edge in shots including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal. Layne Kennedy led the way in shooting for the Macs once again this afternoon as she recorded a team-high four shots with three of shots finding their way on goal.
  • Immaculata did end the game with a slight 9-8 advantage in penalty corners thanks in large part to a 4-1 advantage in this category during the first quarter of play.
Up Next:
Immaculata will remain home on Wednesday evening to welcome a talented Moravian squad who is also in search of its first victory of the season with that contest set to begin at 6:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader inside Draper Walsh Stadium with the Immaculata University women's soccer team set to continue its season-opening home stand opposite Widener beginning at 4 p.m. as game one of the twinbill.
