Mighty Macs Sweep Catholic To Continue Winning Ways

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Macs (16-5-1) continued their winnings ways on Sunday at the IU Softball Field as they swept Catholic (13-13) in a non-conference doubleheader, 4-2 and 6-5.

In game one, junior Michaela Petito went four innings for the win and sophomore Renee DeAngelis had three shutout innings for the save while the IU offense scored all four of their runs in the first, highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore Keani Hindle.

The second game featured a big comeback by the Mighty Macs as they trailed 5-0 through an inning and a half and scored six unanswered runs, including four in the fifth to take the lead for good.  Sophomore Emma Bischoff delivered five shutout innings of relief and junior Tori Fortuna had three hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
-In their half of the first, the Mighty Macs loaded the bases on two walks and a hit, and Hindle made them pay immediately with a two-run single to left-center field that got past the left fielder, allowing a third run to score.  Freshman Cat Knoll had runners on the corners with one out and hit a groundball that the shortstop threw high to first base, allowing Hindle to score from third for the fourth run of the first
-Petito followed that by striking out the side in the second, but would allow single runs in the third and fourth to close her outing
-DeAngelis came on in relief and only faced trouble in the sixth as she worked around a pair of singles.  She retired the side in order in the fifth and seventh innings for her first save of the season

-Catholic added to their lead in the second with three more as they chased senior Jessica Bormann from the game and freshman Sarah Guido came on in relief
-Guido got the Macs on the board in the bottom of the inning as she lined a two-run double to left-center field to cut the deficit to 5-2
-Sophomore Emma Bischoff came on in relief in the third and kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard, allowing the Macs a chance to claw back into it in the fifth inning
-In the fifth, Hindle doubled over the centerfielder's head, moved to third on a groundout and scored on an error to make it 5-3.  With the bases loaded after a single and a walk, Fortuna delivered her third hit of the game, an RBI knock to left field to make it 5-4.  Carter put the ball in play with the bases loaded, forcing another error to tie the game, then sophomore Sarah Reed scored on a passed ball to put the Macs in front for the first time in the second game
