Mighty Macs Bounce Back With Sweep of Wesley Saturday

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata University baseball team put an end to its six-game losing streak and moved up to 4-3 in Atlantic East play Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of Wesley, 7-5 and 9-7. The Macs trailed by a run heading into the bottom of the sixth inning in the opener, but rallied to plate three runs in the frame to take game one before taking advantage of three Wolverine errors and six walks to complete the sweep in the nightcap.

Zach Smiley tossed four and two-thirds innings of one-run ball in relief over the course of the twinbill to pick up his first win of the season and his conference-leading fourth save.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-The Macs struck first in the bottom of the first inning Saturday, as Joey Sacco drew a leadoff walk and moved up to third on an opposite-field single off the bat of Tyler Kmiec. The duo pulled off a double steal to bring Sacco across with the game's first run.
-IU tacked on another run in the second on a Sacco single through the left side, bringing home Greg Grandelli who lined a one-out single to left-center to begin the frame.
-Wesley answered back with a four-run third inning to take its first lead of the day, but Cameron Delisle and Tom Prato drew the Macs even at four with back-to-back run-scoring doubles.
-The Wolverines broke the tie with a single run in the top of the fourth and stayed in control through the top of the sixth. The Mighty Mac lineup came back to life in the home half of the sixth when Domenic Dellabarba lined a leadoff single before Greg Dahl and Grandelli reached to load the bases with no outs. Zach Van Meter followed with a perfectly-executed suicide squeeze to tie the game at five. Kmiec then reached on a fielders choice to plate the go-ahead run and Richard Fontanillas drew a bases-loaded walk  to add an insurance run.

HOW IT HAPPENED

-Wesley struck first in the top of the first with a run on five hits, but Immaculata starter Gabe Hollenbach limited the damage by leaving the bases loaded. Hollenbach settled in to post scoreless second and third innings, allowing only three runs over his five and two-thirds innings to pick up the win on the mound.
-After drawing even with Wesley in the bottom of the first, the Macs took their first lead of the second game in the second on an RBI ground out from Van Meter before Prato lofted a sac fly to right to extend the lead to two in the third.
-The Wolverines battled back to tie the game at three in the top of the fourth , but the Macs responded in a big way by plating five runs on just one hit in the home half to take a five-run lead.
-Greg Grandelli plated the Macs' ninth and final run of the day in the bottom of the fifth with a sac fly to left before Smiley came on to record the final six outs for his fourth save of the season to complete the sweep.
