Mighty Macs Drop Atlantic East Home-Opener to Neumann

IMMACULATA, Pa. - The Immaculata University baseball team hosted its first-ever Atlantic East Conference game Wednesday afternoon against Neumann, dropping an 8-4 decision to the rival Knights. Joey Sacco logged a season-high four hits and scored three runs to pace the Mighty Mac lineup, while Tom Prato and Richard Fontanillas each had RBI knocks in the effort.

Zach Smiley tossed a scoreless two innings in relief while striking out two, lowering his season ERA to a team-best 0.73.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Neumann was first on the board in the opening frame with a two-out, run-scoring groundout, but the Macs answered right back with a run of their own in the home half. Sacco lined a leadoff single to center before coming around to score on Prato's liner back through the middle.
-The Knights continued their early offensive success the very next inning, plating a pair on a one-out, two-run double to right-center before tacking on two more in the third to take a 5-1 lead.
-The Macs started to chip away at the deficit in the bottom of the third as Sacco led off with his second hit of the afternoon and later came around to score on Fontanillas' double that landed just inside the left field line. After a ground out moved Fontanillas to third with two outs, Cameron Delisle lined a single over the shortstop's head to plate the second run of the frame.
-The two sides were held in check over the next two innings, but Neumann extended its lead back out to three with an infield single in the top of the sixth. The Knights went on to add a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh via an RBI triple to the gap in right-center and a sac fly to stretch their lead out to five.
-Despite a Fontanillas sac fly in the bottom of the ninth, the Macs were unable to chip away any further, dropping the Atlantic East contest 8-4.
