IMMACULATA, Pa. - After trailing by eight heading into the bottom of the eighth to Lebanon Valley, the Immaculata University baseball team rallied for five runs to cut the deficit to three and brought the tying run to the plate but were unable to draw even with the Dutchmen, falling 11-8 in Tuesday's non-conference slugfest. The Macs got six strong innings from starting pitcher
Timmy Newell but struggled to back him with run support in the early going despite two-hit days from
Joey Sacco,
Cameron Delisle,
Richard Fontanillas,
Greg Dahl and
Domenic Dellabarba.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Lebanon Valley opened the scoring in the second inning with a three-run frame on the strength of three extra-base hits, capped off by a Nick O'Shea two-run home run.
-The Macs were held in check over the first five frames by the Dutchmen, but broke through in the sixth to cut the deficit to one. Sacco and
Tyler Kmiec drew back-to-back walks to start the frame before being moved into scoring position on Fontanillas' sac bunt. Lebanon Valley made a move to the bullpen and Delisle greeted the reliever with a two-run single through the left side before Dellabarba ripped a double into the right-center gap, but Delisle was cut down at the plate trying to score from first.
-The Dutchmen added a run in the seventh to create some breathing room, but the Macs matched it in the home half when Dahl doubled off the wall in left before coming around to score on an infield error.
-Lebanon Valley sent 13 men to the plate in the top of the eighth en route to a seven-run inning to take an 11-3 lead. The Macs would not go down without a fight, however, as
Kyle Hannon, Sacco and Fontanillas all drove in runs with the bases loaded before Prato worked an 11-pitch walk to make it an 11-6 game. Sacco then crossed the plate on a passed ball before the inning ended as the Macs entered the ninth down just three.
-The Macs were unable to mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth, going down in order to drop the midweek contest, 11-8.
