Macs Cruise To Doubleheader Sweep Of Rosemont

ROSEMONT, Pa.- The Mighty Mac softball team (20-8-2) reached the 20-win plateau on Tuesday afternoon as they swept their former conference foe Rosemont in a pair of contests, 9-1 and 10-0.

In the opener, junior Kayla Sponsel led a 14-hit attack with three of them, and junior Abigail Carter, junior Ashley Rey, and sophomore Keani Hindle all had two apiece as the Macs cruised to victory.  In  game two, the Macs scored 10 runs in the first three innings, highlighted by a three-run double by sophomore Paige Gerst, and freshman Sarah Guido twirled a five inning two-hit shutout to finish off the sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
-The Ravens took advantage of a leadoff triple as they took the 1-0 lead through one against junior Michaela Petito, but that would be the only run the Ravens would get all day
-Sponsel tripled with one out and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Sarah Reed.  The Macs would load the bases on a single and a walk, and Rey delivered the big blow of the inning with a three-run double to left-center field and IU led 4-1
-After a scoreless bottom of the second, the Macs extended their lead in the third with an RBI single by Sponsel, her second hit of the day and a 5-1 advantage for the Macs
-The Mighty Macs put it away in the fourth with three more runs on four hits.  Hindle hit an RBI single, Petito helped her cause with an RBI knock, and sophomore Morgan Macrae delivered an RBI groundout to make it 8-1
-Sophomore Renee DeAngelis came on in the fourth and sat the Ravens down in order before holding them scoreless in the fifth
-The Macs got to the mercy rule when Sponsel collected her third hit of the game to drive in Rey for a 9-1 lead, and DeAngelis ended it in the bottom of the sixth
