Macs Start Season In Style With Opening Sweep

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The Mighty Macs (2-0) couldn't have asked for a better start to their 2019 season as they kicked it off with a spring break trip in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with a pair of shutout victories.

In the opener, the Macs got a combined five-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts from junior Michaela Petito and sophomore Emma Bischoff to top Greenville, 3-0.  In the second game, the Mighty Mac offense erupted, led by three hits from freshman Katy Newton, as they defeated Lancaster Bible, 11-0, in five innings.  Senior Jessica Bormann and sophomore Renee DeAngelis combined on a four-hit shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
-Petito retired Greenville in order and the Macs got some action with two outs as junior Emily Mesey walked and moved to second on a single by junior Ashley Rey.  Mesey then scored on an error to stake the Macs to a 1-0 lead
-The score held there for several innings, with Greenville generating opportunities in the fourth and fifth on lead-off doubles, but Petito erased them both.  The Macs had second and third with one out, but were unable to extend their lead
-Bischoff came on in the sixth and worked around a lead off single, and the Macs finally cashed in during their half of the sixth
-Rey singled with one out, and Petito moved her to third with a two-out double.  An error hit by Bischoff scored Rey, and an RBI single by Bormann gave the Macs a 3-0 lead
-Bischoff ended the game by striking out the side in order

- Bormann worked around a pair of singles to keep the Chargers off the board, and the IU offense went right back to work
-After two quick outs, Newton singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Rey, and Hindle followed with an RBI triple as the Macs led 7-0 through two
-The Macs put the game away with four more in the third inning.  Bormann, junior Tori Fortuna, and sophomore Sarah Reed all singled to load the bases, and Carter brought one home with an RBI groundout.  Newton capped her perfect day with a two-run double, and an error brought home the final IU run of the day
