IMMACULATA, Pa. - The Immaculata University men's basketball team was locked into an offensive battle with Atlantic East Conference rival Cabrini in Saturday afternoon's home finale, but the Macs were unable to keep pace with the sharp-shooting Cavaliers in the second half, falling 95-78. The Mighty Macs took a one-point lead into halftime thanks to a 18-of-37 (48.6%) shooting performance from the field, but were unable to match that production in the second half as the Cavaliers outscored IU, 48-30.
Morgan Bailey recorded his first-career double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds in the effort.
The Mighty Macs honored the program's five seniors -
Mike Piekarski,
Morgan Bailey,
Terence Sklikas,
Cordell Lord and
Jimmy Markham - prior to their final game in Alumnae Hall for their contributions to the program.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Saturday's matchup got off to a fast start as both sides matched each other stride-for-stride on offense. Lord recorded seven points for the Macs in the first six minutes thanks to a pair of threes to give IU an early 11-10 lead. Cabrini responded with an 11-2 run to take an eight-point lead, but was finally put to a halt by
Brandon McCullough trey.
-McCullough's three-ball sparked a 15-2 Mighty Mac run that vaulted the hosts to a five-point advantage over the Cavaliers, due in large part by six
Jordan Ambrose points and four from
Asa Kitchen. From the seven-minute mark on, neither team was able to stretch their lead out beyond four points as the two sides traded the lead several times coming down the stretch. Bailey and Piekarski each hit jumpers with under a minute left in the half, but an Ivan Robinson three at the buzzer cut the Mighty Mac lead to one heading into the break.
-The Macs came out the break the same way they ended it with a flurry of field goals to extend their lead back out to seven, but were ultimately unable to keep the same level of offensive production in the second half. Cabrini made its way back to even the score at 66 at the 11:39 mark before ripping off a 17-4 run to break open the game with a 14-point lead at the five-minute mark. IU attempted to cut into the deficit with attempts from beyond the arc, but the Cavaliers continued to shoot at a high percentage the rest of the way to secure the 95-78 road win.
