Last Second Layup Sinks Men's Basketball

IMMACULATA, Pa.- Penn State-Abington's John Ryan made a layup with 1.2 seconds left to upend Immaculata 68-67 on Tuesday evening at Alumnae Hall.

Immaculata (0-3) overcame a six-point lead in the final minute but couldn't hold on for the last second stand. Asa Kitchen made a pair of free throws with 19 seconds left, giving the Macs its first lead of the game at 67-66 following three forced turnovers.

Brandon McCullough led the Mighty Macs with 20 points while Kitchen joined him in double figures with 19. Josh Singleton chipped in with seven points and added seven rebounds in the set back.

Jay Fitzgerald paced four Nittany Lions in double figures with 21 points as Alex Salata made 4-of-5 three pointers leading to 14 points in the win.   

Penn State-Abington (2-1) jumped on the Macs early, scoring the first seven points of the contest. Singleton ended the run to make it 7-2 in favor of the Nittany Lions with 16:36 left in the opening half.

Immaculata trimmed the lead to two following a basket by McCullough, making it a 9-7 lead for PSU at the 14 minute mark.

Penn State answered with a 10-2 spurt as the Nittany Lions held a 19-9 advantage with 11:46 left in the half.

Steven Dao would spark a 10-2 run for the Mighty Macs to even up the score at 29 with 3:21 remaining in the half. Immaculata held the Nittany Lions to only one basket over 4:30 of game action to get back in the game.

Immaculata found itself down by one at the intermission as the Nittany Lions led 35-34 at the break.

Immaculata would threaten to take the lead in the early going of the second half and kept the deficit at one as the game stood at 46-45 in favor of PSU with 13:23 remaining.

Tim Moore capped a quick 6-0 run to even the score at 51 with 9:28 left in the game. The Macs couldn't get over the hump as the Nittany Lions would answer each score by Immaculata.

Alex Salata hit a pair of threes to give the visitors a 63-57 cushion with 2:56 remaining. Immaculata continued to fight and went on an 8-0 run to take the lead with 19 seconds left before Ryan made the last second layup for the Nittany Lions.

Immaculata continued to wreck havoc in the loss and forced 22 turnovers in the game, leading to 22 points. Penn State held a 47-37 edge in the rebounding and shot 42-percent from the field.

Immaculata now begins a 12-day layoff and resumes action on December 1 at Alvernia for a 2 p.m. tip.
