Kohutka Leads Women's Basketball Past Cedar Crest

ALLENTOWN, Pa.- On the heels of a convincing win that saw the team post its largest margin of victory since the 2016-17 season, the Immaculata University women's basketball team traveled to take on a former conference rival in the Cedar Crest College Falcons. Immaculata played well throughout the contest to cruise to a 70-50 victory on Saturday afternoon, thus, evening its record at 2-2 on the year.

Immaculata trailed for just under one minute in this contest as the Falcons hit the first field goal of the contest before the Macs answered back to claim a lead they would never relinquish.

Annie Kohutka led a trio of Mighty Macs in double-figures ending the contest with what nearly a career-high for the senior guard as she scored 20 points falling just one point shy of matching her career-high of 21, which she set during her freshman season against Arcadia.  while Theresa Kearney and Brielle Rigo each registered double-doubles as Kearney ended the contest with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Rigo chipped in 13 points and 10 rebounds of her own in the victory.
In the first quarter, Immaculata claimed an early lead beginning the game on a 10-2 run in the opening five minutes of the game before Cedar Crest scored its second basket of the game with just over 4:30 to play in the opening stanza. From this point, the two sides traded baskets as Immaculata carried an 18-9 lead into the second period of play.

The second quarter, saw Immaculata again open the period with a solid run this time beginning on a 13-6 run in the opening five minutes to claim a commanding 34-15 lead late in the first half of play. Cedar Crest closed the half with an impressive run of its own, which made the score 36-24 heading to the halftime break.

Theresa Kearney and Annie Kohutka opened the contest with strong shooting performances as both players ended the opening half in double figures as Kohutka recorded 12 points while Kearney added 10 of her own. Kearney also nearly recorded a first half double-double as she also came away with nine rebounds in the opening 20 minutes of play.

As a team, Immaculata shot 33.3 % from the field and three-point range in the opening half while also shooting 62.5 % from the charity stripe through the first two quarters.

The halftime break did little to cool off the Mighty Macs as the team began the second half of play with a 10-2 run over the first four minutes to claim a 46-26 lead with just over six minutes to play in the third quarter. Each team scored seven points over the final six minutes of the third, which sent the game to the fourth quarter with Immaculata leading 53-33.

The final quarter of play followed the same script as the first three periods as the Macs began the frame with a 10-3 run to extend their lead to 63-36 with just over six minutes to play. Cedar Crest answered back with a 14-7 run to close out the game, however, it was not enough to complete the comeback as Immaculata prevailed by a final score of 70-50.

Geminii Cabrera led the way for Cedar Crest ending the contest with 18 points and six rebounds while teammate Mackenzie Borger added 15 points of her own in the setback.

As a team, Immaculata shot 20-of-58 (34.5 %) from the field while also going 8-for-21 (38.1 %) from beyond the arc. Immaculata also went 20-for-29 (69.0 %) from the charity stripe in the victory. Cedar Crest shot just 12-of-41 (29.3 %) from the field while also shooting 2-of-12 (16.7 %) from deep and 24-of-38 (63.2 %) from the line in the loss.

Immaculata also ended the contest with a gaping 47-24 edge in rebounds thanks in part to a 13-3 advantage on the offensive glass, which resulted in four second chance points for the Macs in the victory.

Immaculata will look to continue its strong stretch of play on Wednesday evening inside Alumnae Hall when former Atlantic East rival Cairn pays a visit with that contest set to begin at 6 p.m. This will be the Macs final home game until December 18th when the team returns home to host Rowan in the first game of a season-long five game home stand to close out 2019 and open 2020.
