Comeback Wins Carry Macs To Sweep Of Cedar Crest

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Mighty Macs (14-10, 7-1 CSAC) started their first of three straight doubleheaders with a sweep of Cedar Crest on Friday afternoon at the IU Softball Field, 8-7 and 11-3.

In the first game, the Macs erased a 7-3 deficit after three innings with two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and one in the sixth, including the go-ahead RBI single by senior Annemarie Bartow.  Freshman Renee DeAngelis tossed 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief to earn the first win of her collegiate career.

In game two, the Mighty Macs escaped a few jams defensively and pounded out 17 hits for the big victory.

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Macs started well as sophomore Ashley Rey hit her third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-center, and freshman Keani Hindle followed with an RBI double to left-center to stake IU to a 3-0 lead after one
-Freshman Emma Bischoff got the start and cruised through the first two innings before running into trouble in the third.  Eight consecutive hitters reached base, including two walks and two home runs, and they scored seven runs to take a 7-3 lead.  DeAngelis came in to put out the fire as the Macs trailed
-Slowly, IU started to creep back into the game starting in the fourth as they plated two without a hit after back-to-back walks to lead off the inning to trim the deficit to 7-5
-After DeAngelis tossed her second straight shutout inning, The Macs scored another by virtue of an error after sophomore Abigail Carter led off with a single
-In the sixth, sophomore Jessica Bormann singled to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  Sophomore Emily Mesey then singled to move Bormann to third and Carter tied the game with an RBI single.  Two batters later, Bartow laced a hard groundball to the shortstop's right that she knocked down but everyone was safe and the Macs took the 8-7 lead
-DeAngelis retired the side on three groundballs in the seventh to seal the victory

GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Macs again jumped out to the early lead first inning doubles by Mesey and Rey to the left-center gap for a 1-0 lead
-Cedar Crest eased in front on the strength of three second inning hits and an error against the starting pitcher Bormann
-In the second, the Macs re-took the lead as back-to-back walks started in and a sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position.  Sophomore LeighAnn Brocious laid down a squeeze and reached safely to score the first run before Mesey and Rey each hit RBI singles to put the Macs up 4-2 through two
-IU extended their lead with an RBI double off the bat of sophomore Michaela Petito after Hindle tripled down the right field line to lead off the inning to make it 5-2 through three after Bormann escaped a bases loaded jam with one out in the top of the frame
-In the fourth, Bartow blasted a two-run triple off the right-center field fence that scored Carter and Rey as the Macs had made it 7-2 through four innings
-Cedar Crest got one back in the top of the fifth, but Bormann escaped further trouble by getting a double play ball to end it with the Macs still leading 7-3
-In the fifth, a Mesey RBI single and a run scoring after a throwing error on a Carter infield single inflated the lead to 9-3
-Cedar Crest got one back in the top of the sixth, but the Macs ended the game in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run by Bartow and RBI singles by Brocious and sophomore Laura DiLucia to polish off the sweep
