Newell Tosses Seven Strong, Macs Hold on For CSAC Win

IMMACULATA, Pa. - The Immaculata University baseball team got seven-plus strong innings from sophomore right-hander Timmy Newell and a three-hit, three RBI day from center fielder Tristan Ryan to down visiting Gwynedd Mercy for its second consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) victory Tuesday, 8-6.

Junior left fielder Cameron Delisle produced two doubles and drove in a run in the effort, and right-hander Zach Smiley tossed two pressure-packed innings in relief to lock down his first save of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Gwynedd Mercy struck in the top of the first when a one-out triple came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dave Tatoian. The Macs looked poised to answer right back in the home half, but Tyler Kmiec and Justin Dempsey were left stranded in scoring position after both were hit by pitches earlier in the frame.
-After the two sides traded scoreless innings in the second, IU broke through with a pair of runs in the third to take its first lead of the game. Tristan Ryan belted a leadoff triple to the base of the wall in right center and Kmiec followed with a two-bagger to nearly the same spot to bring home the Macs' first run. Following a ground out to move Kmiec up to third with one away, a Gwynedd pickoff attempt to third went awry, allowing him to cross the plate with an unearned run.
-In the bottom of the fifth, Immaculata broke the game open with four runs to extend its lead to five. Brad Misialek led off with an infield hit and moved up to second following a Chris Szekeres sac bunt. Cameron Delisle wasted no time bringing the IU shortstop home, connecting for a run-scoring double off the wall in left, his second extra-base hit of the afternoon.
-Delisle would later come in to score on a wild pitch, but the rally continued with consecutive walks issued to Vinny Carlesi and Zach Van Meter. After the pair advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch, Ryan lined a two-run single to center to bring both baserunners across the plate.
-Misialek tacked on a pair of insurance himself with run-scoring singles in the sixth and seventh, which proved to be critical as the Griffins began to mount a comeback once Timmy Newell was lifted from the game after facing two batters in the eighth.
-Gwynedd rallied for three runs in the eighth to make it an 8-4 game - one on a solo home run and the other two via a two-run single through the left side. Immaculata then summoned right-hander Zach Smiley from the bullpen, who inherited a bases-loaded, no out jam to maneuver through. The righty came up big, striking out the first batter he faced before inducing a 6-3 double play to end the threat.
-In the top of the ninth, the Griffins loaded the bases yet again - this time with the tying run on second and go-ahead run on first - but Smiley batted to get the Gwynedd pinch hitter to ground one to Pat Devenney at second as the Macs held on for the 8-6 victory.
-Newell was brilliant in his first home start of the 2018 season, allowing only five hits over his final six-plus innings of work after allowing the lone run in the top of the first. The sophomore held the Griffins scoreless for six consecutive innings en route to his third win of the year.
