Bormann's Complete Game Leads To Split At Wesley

DOVER, Del.- The Immaculata softball team (4-8) returned to action on Saturday afternoon with a road trip to Wesley (10-5), and the Mighty Macs split their fourth doubleheader of the year by winning game one, 5-1, and dropping the nightcap, 4-1.

In game one, junior Jessica Bormann was outstanding as she tossed her third complete game of the season, allowing just three hits and one run in the process while the IU offense pounded out 11 hits.

In the second game, sophomore Ashley Rey had three hits to lead a 10-hit IU attack, but the Macs stranded 12 runners in the loss.

GAME 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Mighty Macs jumped out to an early lead with a first inning run as Rey doubled to center field, moved to second on a single by freshman Keani Hindle, and scored on a single to left-center by sophomore Michaela Petito
-In the second, the Macs capitalized on a Wesley miscue as they loaded the bases with two outs on three walks, and two runs came around to score on a fielding error off the bat of Hindle to put the Macs up 3-0
-IU added a single run in the third on a wild pitch scored by Petito, and another in the fourth on an RBI single to right field off the bat of sophomore Laura DiLucia to score senior Annemarie Bartow, who singled with one out as IU led 5-0 through five innings
-On the other side, Bormann was dominant, allowed a two-out double in the first, and otherwise keeping the Wolverines off the bases.  She retired the side in order in the second through fifth innings, and retired 14 consecutive batters at one point
-Wesley got on the board in the sixth with a two-out RBI single, but that would be their only offense in game one as the Macs got the victory

GAME 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Game two started the same as game one with Rey getting things going with a one-out double, and she scored on a Petito RBI single to put the Macs up 1-0
-Meanwhile, Petito got the start and retired the side in order in the first and got around a pair of singles in the second to send the game to the third with the Macs leading 1-0
-The Macs then stranded a pair of singles in the top of the third, and Wesley hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to take a lead they would not relinquish
-The Macs loaded the bases in the fourth with two outs, but that threat was ended with a strikeout, and the Macs surrendered another run on back-to-back hits against freshman reliever Renee DeAngelis to fall into a 3-1 hole through four innings
-Wesley added another in the sixth, but the Macs continued to battle, getting multiple runners on in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, however they were unable to push any across in a losing effort
