DOVER, Del. - The Immaculata University baseball team returned to action for the first time since its stay in Fort Pierce, Fla., and fell short at Wesley (3-5), 4-1. The Macs were held to just six hits on the day and could not back up starter
Eddie Decker, who limited the Wolverines to only two earned runs on six hits over 5.1 innings.
Pat Devenney drove in the lone IU run with an RBI double in the seventh.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Decker was in control on the mound in the early going, tossing four-straight scoreless frames to begin his outing. The right-hander also retired eight of the first ten batters he faced.
-The Macs faced much of the same fate against Wesley starter Sam Meck, who stranded an IU runner in scoring position in both the second and third innings.
-Wesley threatened the push across the game's first run in its half of the fourth with runners at second and third with one away, but Decker escaped the jam and kept the Wolverines off the board with a ground out and strikeout.
-The Macs were poised to answer in the top of the fifth when
Chris Szekeres led off with a single and moved up to third following a sacrifice bunt and a ground out, but was ultimately left in scoring position to end the frame.
-The Wolverines took advantage with the first run of the game on three hits in the bottom half, before striking for three more in the sixth. Wesley used three hits to push three across, and benefited from two IU errors in the inning.
-IU put together a rally in the top of the seventh when
Zach Van Meter reached on a fielder's choice and moved up to second on Szekeres' second knock of the day with one out. Devenney followed with a double into the right-center gap, scoring Van Meter for the Macs' first run.
-Devenney's run-scoring double is all IU would get the rest of the way as the Wesley bullpen posted two hitless innings to close it out.
