Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Whaley's Double Overtime Game-Winner Caps Huge Comeback

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata women's lacrosse team (2-1) trailed King's College (2-5) by six goals at 12-6 with more than 20 minutes remaining in Monday night's non-conference contest, but the Macs were not going to be denied as they scored six consecutive goals to close out regulation and then sophomore Layne Kennedy found senior Brittany Whaley a little more than a minute into double overtime, and she buried the game-winner to lift the Macs to a thrilling 13-12 comeback victory.

Whaley was outstanding on the day, scoring five goals and dishing out three assists for eight points, and in the process she eclipsed 100 points for her career.  Kennedy also had a great game with four goals and three assists for seven points.  Senior Hannah Verrecchia added three points with two goals and an assist, senior Olivia Carter had a goal and an assist, and freshman Maura Murray had a goal.

Sophomore Emily Schumann had 14 saves on the day, including a few crucial saves late in the game to help the Macs hold the Monarchs without a goal for the final 24 minutes and 12 seconds of the game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-King's took control right out of the gates as they scored six of the first seven goals over the opening 11 minutes to build a 6-1 lead early on
-Kennedy scored on an assist from Whaley and then Whaley scored one of her own over the next 1:27 to trim the deficit to 6-3
-Each team would score twice more over the final 16 minutes of the half, Whaley and Kennedy again providing the offense for the Macs, to head to the break trailing 8-5
-The Monarchs again started the second half much like they started the first, this time scoring four of the first five to build up a 12-6 lead with 20:05 remaining in the contest, in what turned out to be the final offense of the day for King's
-Carter scored on an assist from Whaley, Murray from Kennedy, and Whaley unassisted to make it 12-9 and force a King's timeout with 11:18 to go in the game
-The Macs continued to possess and eventually broke through as Verrecchia scored her two goals back-to-back on assists from Kennedy and Whaley to make it 12-11 with 3:15 remaining
-Down a player due to a yellow card with under two minutes to go, the Macs were in need of some heroics, and Kennedy provided that from the left side of the cage with 1:34 to go to tie it at 12-12
-In the overtime period, the Macs turned it over on their best chance, and on the other end, Schumann made a big stop to send it to double overtime
-In the final extra session, Kennedy forced her way close to the cage and dished it to Whaley right in front of the net and her shot snuck just inside the crossbar for the game-winner
