Piekarski Notches A Career-High Despite Overtime Loss

IMMACULATA, Pa.- In a game that the Mighty Macs trailed for nearly the entire time, they managed to claw their way back and force overtime on Monday night at Alumnae Hall against PSU-Harrisburg (5-1), but the Nittany Lions outscored the Macs (2-5), 15-9, in the extra session and fell, 91-85.
 
Senior Mike Piekarski poured in a career-high 33 points, falling two points shy of the school record, 29 of which came after halftime.  Junior Jordan Ambrose scored 18 and sophomore Brandon McCullough notched 15.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Penn State took a 44-34 lead at the break as they rode an 11-0 start to the game to take control
-They led by as many as 14 points, but they whittled the deficit down to five with 2:28 to go in the period on a three by Ambrose, and the Nittany Lions made it 44-34 at the break
-In the second half, the Nittany Lions continued to keep the Macs at arms' length, but the Macs weren't going away as Piekarski nailed a three midway through the half to make it 59-56
-The Macs were then trailing by nine at 72-63 with five minutes go and then ripped off nine straight to tie it for the first time since the start of the game.  Piekarski hit a three before two free throws by McCullough.  Junior Kristopher Bob then laid one in and Piekarski hit a pair of free throws to tie the game 72-72 with 3:21 left
-Twice more, the Nittany Lions took a two-point lead, but both times it was erased by Piekarski free throws
-With the score tied 76-76, the Macs had one more possession, but McCullough missed a three and the game went to an extra session
-In overtime, the Macs took their first lead of the game on reverse layup by Bobo, but the Nittany Lions went on a 7-0 to take the lead for good
 
TEAM COMPARISON
-The Macs were 24-of-58 (41.4%), but the Nittany Lions were 31-of-62 (50%) from the field
-The Mighty Macs knocked down 10 three pointers, led by four from Piekarski and three from Ambrose while the Nittany Lions hit nine triples
-IU was 27-of-33 (81.8%) from the line, led by 13-of-15 by Piekarski, while the Nittany Lions were 20-of-30
-The Macs were outrebounded 46-29, but forced 21 turnovers to just 12 of their own
