RADNOR, Pa. - Carly Quigley netted two goals in the first ten minutes of Wednesday's Atlantic East Conference Tournament semifinal to lift the sixth-seeded Immaculata University women's soccer team past top-seeded Cabrini, 3-0, to advance to the first-ever Atlantic East Women's Soccer Championship. Freshman goalkeeper
Brooke Shissler made nine saves and the Mighty Mac back line held strong to keep the regular season conference champion Cavaliers off the board for the full 90 minutes, the Macs' second shutout victory of the season.
Riley Rudd added an insurance tally with five minutes remaining, all but sealing the Macs' second-consecutive playoff victory. The goal was Rudd's team-leading tenth of the season, which ranks third in the Atlantic East this season.
Immaculata will travel to No. 4 Marywood, winner of their Atlantic East Semifinal at Wesley, on Saturday at 1 p.m. for the inaugural Atlantic East Conference crown.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-The Mighty Macs set the tempo early in Wednesday's semifinal matchup, as IU carried the ball deep into Cabrini territory and was awarded a corner just 48 seconds into the match.
Carrie Quigley delivered a high ball into the box that was deflected and met head-on by
Carly Quigley, who one-time it past the keeper for the game's first goal.
-
Carly Quigley only needed six more minutes to double the Macs' early lead, as she controlled the ball right around midfield and fired a high, arcing ball from 40 yards out the went over the head of the unsuspecting Cabrini keeper and in just under the crossbar.
-The Macs went on to limit the host Cavaliers to just four shots the rest of the way in the first half, while also clearing a pair of pivotal Cabrini corners in the final three minutes of the first 45 to take a two-goal lead into the break.
-The second half featured a prominent Cabrini offensive presence as the Macs faced a total of 15 shots and defended six corners in the second half.
Brooke Shissler was brilliant in the cage while the Mighty Mac back line limited the Cabrini forwards from having clean looks on net as the Cavaliers were still unable to break through with their first goal.
-In the final ten minutes of the contest, the Macs began to take advantage of Cabrini's high back line by lofting balls over the heads of the Cavalier defenders, creating three-on-two and two-on-one opportunities. Despite a few offside calls made against IU, the Macs finally broke through when
Kayla Cadden made a tackle on a Cabrini defender on the right edge and centered the ball into the box to
Riley Rudd who floated a shot over the keeper's head and into the bottom left corner of the net.
TEAM COMPARISON
-Cabrini held the edge in shots on goal 22-5, and in shots on goal at a 9-3 clip.
