SCRANTON, Pa. - The Immaculata University field hockey team took an early lead in its Atlantic East Conference quarterfinal matchup at Marywood Monday night - and later got a pivotal game-tying goal off the stick off
Willa Thompson - but the Macs were unable to break through and regain the lead in a 4-2 loss as the 2018 season came to a close. Burkholder also assisted on Thompson's second-half tally to finish the night with a team-high three points in her final career game.
Thompson's goal was her seventh of the season, placing her in sole possession of the team lead in goals (7) and points (17).
HOW IT HAPPENED
-A majority of the first half featured a strong presence by the Mighty Mac defense, as they faced seven shots and defended seven penalty corners without allowing a goal early on.
-The Mighty Mac forwards rewarded their defense's first half play with the game's first goal, as an Immaculata corner resulted in a loose ball in front of the cage that landed on the stick of
Layne Kennedy. After her shot was deflected to the left, Burkholder was there to bury it in the back of the cage to give the Macs the 1-0 lead.
-Moments later, with just over two minutes remaining in the half, the Pacers were able even the score at one as the two sides entered the break deadlocked at one.
-The Pacers came out of the break and took their first lead of the game in the 43rd minute, but a Mighty Mac penalty corner nearly ten minutes later resulted in the game-tying goal off Thompson's stick, who was able to beat a diving keeper bottom left.
-With just under seven minutes remaining in regulation, Marywood was able to produce the eventual game-winning goal after a cross from the left edge was met with a one--time shot past the goalie. Marywood would go on to add an insurance tally in the final minute to take the 4-2 win to advance to the semifinals.
