Volleyball Falls To Marywood In Thriller, 3-1

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata volleyball has its senior night spoiled by Marywood as the visiting Pacers defeated the Mighty Macs, 3-1. Marywood won the first two sets, 25-23 and 25-20, but Immaculata came back to win the third, 25-17. The fourth set was a battle at the end with neither side wanting to give in, but Marywood eventually claimed the 31-29 win for the match.
 
Immaculata, which clinched a berth in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Tournament last week, falls to 8-11, 6-4 CSAC. Marywood improved to 11-15, 7-2 in the CSAC.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The opening set was a back and forth affair as neither squad won more than four straight points and the lead kept changing hands. Marywood was ahead, 17-16, when Immaculata had its four-point run to gain a 20-17 advantage as Gabrielle Guerrera and Shelby Belk had kills, and Belk and Olivia Zdrazsinski put up a block. Marywood then won three points to even the set at 20-20. The momentum swing back in the Mighty Macs favor as they led 23-21. However, Marywood won the last four points for the early lead.
- The Mighty Macs were ahead early in the second set, 6-5, as the Pacers went on a six-point spurt to quickly take an 11-6 advantage. Immaculata chipped away and eventually tied the set at 14-all. Following Marywood taking a four-point lead (20-16), Immaculata used kills from Rachael Rockefeller, Arden Vizzard, and Zdradzinski along with a hitting error by the Pacers to pull even at 20-20. But, the Pacers won the side-out and closed out the set, 25-20.
- Immaculata came out determined in the third set putting together a six-point run that gave the Mighty Macs an 8-4 lead. The Mighty Macs never relinquished their lead, and the closest the Pacers could come was within four points. Marywood last pulled within four at the 21-17 mark, and Immaculata pulled the set out with a kill from Rockefeller, two aces from Lex Poss and a Marywood attack error.
- The fourth set was a marathon thriller. The set was tied at 5-5 when Marywood went on a 10-point run as Immaculata was forced to use both its timeouts as the Pacers went up 15-5. Immaculata still trailed by 10 points (17-7), when it won five-consecutive points to get the score to 17-12. Marywood pushed its advantage to 20-12, and still led by eight at 23-17. The Mighty Macs got a point on an attack error by the Pacers followed by a Marywood setting error. Immaculata then had a kill by Zdradzinski, followed by two more Marywood errors, and a block from Rockefeller and Guerrera, and the match was tied at 23-23. The teams went back and forth with a total of six set points along the way. The set was tied at 29-all, but Marywood won the next two points on kills for the match.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Kills: Gabrielle Guerrera led the team with 10 kills. Shelby Belk made nine, and both Olivia Zdradzinski and Arden Vizzard chipped in eight kills.
- Assists: Zdradzinski handed out 21 assists, while Lex Poss contributed 16 assists.
- Service Aces: Zdradzinski and Poss both had two aces.
- Digs: Four Immaculata players were in double figures for digs with Vizzard making 20. Zdradzinski recorded 16, Olivia Carter had 11, and Sara Desmond made 10 digs.
- Blocks: Belk had five total blocks (2 solo, 3 assisted), and Zdradzinski was in on three blocks. Guerrera and Rachael Rockefeller each registered two blocks.
