IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata field hockey team got their season started in fine fashion as a penalty corner goal from sophomore
Hilary Burkholder was the difference in a 1-0 shutout victory by the Macs over Wesley (0-1) in non-conference action at Draper Walsh Stadium. Senior goalie
Sarah Pasternak was stout in the cage collecting 13 saves on the afternoon.
The first half was played very evenly between the two teams as shots were tied 6-6, but the Macs had the biggest swing of the half. The Macs were awarded a penalty corner in the 23
rd minute and Burkholder stepped in and buried the first Immaculata goal of the season to the left hand side of the net for the 1-0 lead. The Macs would hold that advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, the Mac defense was heavily tested as the Wolverines applied pressure for most of the period in an attempt to net the equalizer. Senior defender
Megan Wheeler came up with a pair of defensive saves to preserve the shutout.
On offense, junior
Megan Donegan had the best attempt on a penalty corner as she had an opportunity next to the net, but she was unable to make clean contact as the Macs held onto the one goal lead.
Pasternak was outstanding in the second half with nine of her saves to get the third shutout of her career to start her senior campaign.
The Mighty Macs will look to make it two wins in a row this Saturday as they host Widener at 1:30 p.m. at Draper Walsh Stadium.
