IMMACULATA, Pa.- On a beautiful and warm Tuesday afternoon, the Immaculata men's soccer team (10-4-1, 5-1 CSAC) played host to the Cabrini University Cavaliers (7-6-1, 4-2 CSAC) and the Macs came away with their fifth victory of the season, this one by a score of 1-0. The Macs last win over the Cavs came in 2009 and this victory also ties the Macs' previous record for most wins in a season with 10, also in 2009. This game was a pivotal CSAC matchup as each team entered with 12 points leaving them tied for third place in the standings. The Macs are coming in off a big win over the Gwynedd Mercy Griffins by a score of 2-0 this past Saturday that saw senior goalie
Joe Lubonski get his record breaking ninth career shutout.
Â
In the first half neither team really had a solid edge in possession, however, the Cavs did outshoot the Macs by a seven to two margin. The Cavs had three shots on goal all of which were saved by Lubonski.
Â
In the second, half, IU took advantage of a big play up front to take the lead and never look back. In the 54
th minute, senior
Kyle Jumalon scored his sixth goal of the season and record breaking 21
st goal of his career off a great pass from sophomore
Mark Staudenmayer to give the Macs a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Macs would not look back from this point as Lubonski made 12 saves and got some help from his teammates to keep the Cavs off the board. The Cavs would push hard in the closing minutes of regulation but the defense would prove to be up to the task. The Cavs senior goalie would make three saves of his own to keep his team in the game but it would not be enough to defeat the Macs.
Â
The Mighty Macs next game is Saturday the 22
