Lubonski Sets Shutout Record In 2-0 Victory

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa.-On a beautiful Saturday afternoon the Immaculata men's soccer team (9-4-1, 4-1 CSAC) hosted the Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins (7-8-0, 3-2 CSAC) and the Macs would go on to win by a final score of 2-0. The Macs entered today's game off a big win over another CSAC opponent in the Rosemont College Ravens by a score of 5-1. This win, the fourth straight for IU, gave the Macs a vital three points in the CSAC standings as the Macs and Griffins entered the game tied with nine points each.  This win also gave senior goalie Joe Lubonski his ninth career shutout which breaks the previous team record of eight set by Stone Gahagan who was goalie from 2006-2009.

In the first half no team really dominated possession through the first 15 minutes as there were only two shots, both coming from the visitors and they were both harmlessly high. The play would pick up from this point forward as each team began to get better looks at the net. The Macs would break through in the 33rd minute when senior Pat Friend scored on a flying header off a great free kick from freshman Connor Lindsay. This goal would swing the momentum slightly as the Macs would then get many more great opportunities to end the half although they could not convert any of them into goals. The Macs logged six shots in the first half compared to just five for the Griffins.  The Macs, thanks to the slight shot advantage and a strong team wide defensive effort, would take a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

In the second half the Macs did well to control the tempo once again out possessing the Griffins, however, the shots ended up being even at 10 a side at the conclusion of the contest. The Macs would strike one more time in the 63rd minute when Alex Noel buried a penalty kick for his team leading seventh goal of the season.  The Griffins would get some shots off but none of them would prove to be an issue as Lubonski and company did well to stop all of the chances.

Lubonski would end the day with three saves and his freshman counterpart Tyler Blair would match him with three saves of his own.

The Macs next home game is Tuesday the 18th when they host Cabrini beginning at 4 p.m.
