BOX SCORE
BRYN ATHYN, Pa.- The Immaculata men's tennis team grabbed their first win of the young season on Monday afternoon as they defeated Bryn Athyn, 8-1, for their first non-conference win since 2013. The Mighty Macs hope to use the momentum from today's victory as they will play three Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) matches in the next five days.
IU started off by sweeping the doubles to take firm control of the match. Junior
Nick Coia and freshman
Patrick Tierno teamed up at the first doubles position to get their first victory as a tandem by a score of 8-4. Senior
Will DeSantis and sophomore
John Binner were looking to bounce back after a tough tiebreak defeat against Penn State-Brandywine on Thursday, and they did just that with an 8-2 win in the second slot. Sophomores
Stephen Smith and
Mark Hueber made it two consecutive doubles wins for the pair as they were victorious in the third position, 8-1.
In singles, the Macs claimed five, straight sets victories and very nearly earned a third, but Tierno fell in a tiebreaker, 10-7, at the second singles spot. Coia won 6-2, 6-3 in the first spot, DeSantis came away with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the third spot, and Binner defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-2 in the fifth spot as all three players grabbed their first singles wins of the season.
Smith won easily in the fourth spot, 6-0, 6-1 and senior
Alessandro Mazzone followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the sixth spot, as both players picked up their second consecutive singles' wins.
The Macs will now shift their focus to CSAC play as they host Cabrini tomorrow afternoon at the IU Tennis Courts at 3:30 p.m.
