Volleyball Earns Sweep Against Misericordia, 3-0

IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University continued its hot start to the 2014 volleyball season Wednesday night inside Alumnae Hall sweeping Misericordia, 3-0, in non-conference action. The Mighty Macs won the match with scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-23.
 
Immaculata (4-0) rallied from four points down early in the first set for the win. Trailing Misericordia, 11-8, Immaculata scored seven consecutive points to grab the 15-11 lead. The Cougars got within two (23-21) at the end but the Mighty Macs were able to put the set away.
 
The Mighty Macs led from the start of the second set jumping out to an 11-4 lead. Immaculata dominated the middle set as Misericordia hit negative .125 as a team.
 
Misericordia (1-4) rallied back for the third set. Immaculata won the first point of the set, but it was Misericordia that took the lead from that point. It had been a two or three point game up until the 12-10 mark. That is when the Cougars went on a seven-point run to take the 19-10 lead.
 
A kill by Tess Kieffer ended the Cougars run, and it turned out that it began an 8-2 spurt for the Mighty Macs that allowed the hosts to get back in the set trailing just 21-18. Misericordia pushed its lead to 23-20, but the visitors seemed to run out of momentum. Immaculata ended the match with five straight points to complete the third-set comeback for the thrilling win.
 
Immaculata showed strong blocking throughout the match with 11 team blocks.
 
Junior Jamie Rombach paced the team with seven kills, while junior Stephanie Johler finished with six kills and six total blocks. Freshman Arden Vizzard totaled six kills and seven digs, and Kieffer recorded five kills and four blocks. Sophomore Marissa Casella posted five blocks, and freshman Gabrielle Guerrera had four blocks.
 
Sophomore Maranda Jones recorded 11 assists and six digs, while senior Brittany Thompson posted 10 assists, three service aces and eight digs. Sophomore Molly Truitt had a team-high 16 digs and three service aces.
 
Immaculata returns to the court on Tuesday, September 9, hosting Penn State Berks at 7 p.m.
