Men's Basketball Wins Double Overtime Thriller, 104-101

CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa.- After a week off since their last game, the Immaculata men's basketball team (9-10, 7-5 CSAC) played a double-overtime thriller against Baptist Bible (7-14, 4-5 CSAC) and came out on top 104-101, setting the new program-record for points score in a single game.  The Mighty Macs had six double figure scorers, led by 21 by junior Mamadou Diakite (9 rebounds).  The team also set new team records for three point field goals made (13) and free throws attempted (41).
 
Junior Barry Brockington logged the first double-double of his Immaculata career with 15 points and 12 boards, while freshman Matt Simon chipped in a career-high 16 points on with five made three pointers.  Sophomore Rodney Duncan had 19 points and sophomore Tyreek Peeples played a team-high 48 minutes while pouring in 16 points and dishing out five assists.  Freshman Roy Ferrell Jr. had 12 points and six assists as the final double digit scorer.
 
The Mighty Macs were deadly from three-point range making 13 of 26 attempts for a season-high 50% from beyond the arc.  The team also shot 51.6% from the field (32-for-62).
 
In double overtime, Immaculata had the lead the entire time, even swelling their advantage to as large as six at 99-93 with 39 seconds remaining. 
 
Brockington hit two free throws and Duncan knocked down one, but Baptist Bible kept fighting back and trimmed the lead to one with two seconds to go.  Ferrell Jr. was quickly fouled and hit both free throws to get the lead to 104-101, and Luke Peterson's (25 points) last gasp three-pointer missed to give IU the double-overtime victory.
 
Immaculata outscored the Defenders 17-14 in the second overtime after the teams only scored eight points apiece in the first overtime.  Baptist Bible scored to tie the game with 1:22 to go, and each team missed opportunities to win it in the first overtime.
 
In the second half, Baptist Bible led for much of the way and had their lead as large as 10 at 68-58 with just under ten minutes to go in the game.  The Mighty Macs then went on a 14-4 run to tie the game at 72-72 with 4:41 remaining.  Simon scored seven straight points to spark the run and Duncan poured in five to close it out.
 
Each team took the lead down the stretch, but Baptist Bible held a 77-74 lead with 1:52 to left.  Duncan then hit two free throws on the next possession, and after a Baptist Bible miss, Diakite had a traditional three-point play with 42 seconds left to give IU the two-point lead.  Baptist Bible's Abe Valentine (27 points) then hit two free throws in the next possession to send the game to overtime tied at 79-79.
 
IU trailed 37-30 at the half.
 
The win was Immaculata's fifth in their last six games.  They have a challenging stretch ahead as they will play four games this coming week, starting with hosting Gwynedd Mercy at 7 p.m. on Monday night.
 
NOTES: This was the third double-overtime in IU history, with the last coming last season in a loss to Gwynedd Mercy … The first was a 93-90 victory over Baptist Bible on January 10, 2011 … Senior Brandon Smith moved into fourth on the all-time scoring list with 815 total points in his career, passing Dan Lepone (05-08) and Julius Lopez (05-09).
