Mighty Macs Have 71-68 Setback At Marywood

SCRANTON, Pa. – Immaculata University's men's basketball squad suffered a 71-68 setback at Marywood University Saturday evening in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
 
The Mighty Macs fall to 10-12 overall, 8-7 in the CSAC, while the Pacers improve to 9-14, 5-11 CSAC.
 
Mamadou Diakite and Rodney Duncan combined for just over half of Immaculata's 68 points as Diakite poured in a team-leading 18 points and Duncan finished with 17. Diakite was one rebound shy of a double-double as he settled with nine boards. Duncan was 4-for-8 from long range during the contest.
 
Carl Garner chipped in nine points, and Matt Simon had seven. Tyreek Peeples and Roy Ferrell Jr. each handed out three assists.
 
Immaculata shot over 50 percent from the field for the sixth time this season, firing 53.5 percent (23-43) for the contest. It was the Mighty Macs' first loss in those six games in which they shot .500 or better. Immaculata also had its best game at the free throw line in program history as it was 14-for-15 (.933).  
 
Immaculata had a 5-0 lead to start the contest, but Marywood scored 10 straight points to start a 16-2 run as the Pacers took a 16-7 lead at the 11:25 mark of the first half. The Mighty Macs responded with a 15-5 streak, taking back the lead (22-21) with 7:29 to go in the half.
 
With the game tied at 29-all with 3:51 remaining in the opening frame, Marywood closed out the half on an 11-3 spurt that saw the hosts take a 40-32 lead into the locker room.
 
 A 6-1 start to the second half for the Pacers had Marywood ahead by its largest margin of the game (46-33) just 2:30 into the second half. Eight unanswered points, including two 3-pointers by the Mighty Macs cut the Pacers, lead to five (46-41) at the 15:07 mark. 

Marywood held what would be its final double-digit lead of the night (57-47) with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game when Immaculata began to slowly cut into the Pacers' lead. The Mighty Macs were within three (60-57) of the Pacers with 7:05 left after a 10-3 spurt in which half of Immaculata's points came at the charity stripe.
 
As the two teams continued to trade baskets with Marywood maintaining the lead, it was Peeples' trey with 4:10 remaining that put Immaculata within two of Marywood, 64-62. The Pacers extended their lead back to four points three times, and each time the Mighty Macs would draw back within two. Farrell Jr.'s two free throws with just 25 seconds left drew Immaculata within 70-68.
 
After Marywood was only able to connect on the first end of a pair of free throws with 19 ticks remaining, it set up two 3-point attempts for Immaculata to tie the game as time expired.
 
Marywood's Ryan Corrigan scored a game-high 31 points.
 
Immaculata plays its final regular-season contest at Alumnae Hall on Monday night hosting Rosemont at 8 p.m.
