Volleyball Claims Two Wins In Five Sets

READING, Pa. – Immaculata University's volleyball team captured a pair of five-set victories on Saturday afternoon. The Mighty Macs opened the morning taking host Alvernia to a fifth set to earn the win, and Immaculata completed action with a 3-2 victory against Delaware Valley.
 
The Mighty Macs were able to capture the win against the Crusaders by scores of 25-17, 20-25, 23-25, 25-23 and 15-10. Immaculata then downed Delaware Valley 25-22, 9-25, 25-15, 18-25 and 15-7.
 
Immaculata improved to 4-7 overall with the two wins. Alvernia slipped to 4-6 and Delaware Valley dropped to 5-6 this season.
 
The Mighty Macs won the opening set against the Crusaders, 25-17. However, Alvernia was able to win the second and third sets, 25-20 and 25-23, respectively, to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
Immaculata took the early edge in the fourth set, and were up by as many as seven points (9-2). Alvernia came back scoring 11 of 13 points to overtake Immaculata, 13-11. The Crusaders were able to maintain a slim lead until the Mighty Macs scored three-straight points to tie the set at 19-all. Alvernia again ran out to a three-point edge (22-19), but Immaculata saved off the defeat by capitalizing on four Crusader errors, a block by Allison Lang and Alexandra Okoro and a Brittany Thompson service ace to tie the match with a 25-23 fourth-set victory.
 
After falling behind 2-0 in the fifth set, Immaculata scored on 10 of the next 12 points to hold a 10-4 edge. Seven of the 10 Mighty Mac points came on kills from Thompson, Andrea Okoro, Stephanie Johler and Jamie Rombach. Alvernia came back to cut Immaculata's lead to 10-8, but the Mighty Macs were able to hang on to win both the fifth set and match, 15-10.
 
Rombach led the Mighty Macs with 16 kills and finished with a double-double after making 19 digs. She also served up two aces. Andrea Okoro was second on the squad with nine kills, and Rebecca McDonald finished with eight kills, two blocks and two service aces.
 
Johler and Alexandra Okoro each recorded seven kills, while Okoro added two blocks. Lang ended the match with six kills and two blocks. Thompson registered a team-leading 23 assists while adding 11 digs and two aces. Maranda Jones accounted for 19 assists and nine digs. The back row was led by Molly Truitt with 30 digs and two service aces, and Haley Swearer with 17 digs.
 
Immaculata was stretched to the maximum again in the second match of the day against Delaware Valley. The Mighty Macs won the first and third sets while the Aggies claimed the second and fourth sets.
 
Rombach again led the squad as she poured in 16 kills and 14 digs for another double-double performance. Andrea Okoro also reached double figures in kills with 10, and Johler chipped in six kills. Lang led the team up front with four blocks and five kills, while McDonald had two blocks to accompany her five kills.
 
Thompson finished with 21 assists and three service aces, and Jones added 19 assists and three aces. Truitt paced the Mighty Macs with 22 digs and also served up a team-high four aces.  Swearer also made 10 digs for the Mighty Macs.
 
Immaculata looks to continue its win streak on Tuesday when it travels to Ursinus at 7 p.m.
