IMMACULATA, Pa. – Visiting Alvernia University scored with nine minutes left in the second half to break a tie and held on for a 2-1 victory over host Immaculata University in the season opener for both schools Friday afternoon at Draper Walsh Stadium.
Â
Alvernia broke through first in the first half on a goal by Alex Martyn in the 34th minute. He finished off a cross through the box right to his feet. The cross got past Immaculata freshman goalkeeper
Joseph Lubonski, and Martyn blasted one in-between a pair of Mighty Macs defenders for the only goal of the first half.
Â
The hosts came roaring back in the second half when
Kyle Jumalon beat Alvernia keeper David Giannini to a cross just out past the penalty dot and booted the ball into an open net for his first collegiate goal.
Tyler Budgick sent one into the box from the far sideline that Jumalon got to first.
Â
That's how things stayed until Josh Wollaston kicked in the game-winner in the 81st minute after a scramble in front of the Mighty Macs net.
Â
Lubonski (0-1) made five saves in his first college match. Alvernia's Matt Wells was credited with three saves while Giannini (1-0) made just one save and got the win in goal.
