Women's Soccer Wins 1-0, Clinches CSAC Playoff Berth

Box Score

IMMACULATA, Pa.- The Immaculata women's soccer team (7-9-2, 6-3-2 CSAC) clinched their first playoff berth since 2010 with a 1-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy (3-11-4, 3-5-3 CSAC) in the team's regular season finale.  Junior Barbara Stanley netted the lone goal for the Mighty Macs on Senior Night, where the team was celebrating the final home game in the careers of Rachel Gannon, Amanda Markie, and Rebecca Stack.

The Mighty Macs and Griffins played scoreless for a majority of the first half until IU struck in the final minute.  With 54 seconds left, Immaculata had a corner kick, the first for either side in the half.  Freshman Shelby Clare centered the ball off the corner, and after one bounce, Stanley drilled the ball into the back of the net for the first goal of her career and a 1-0 Immaculata lead at half.

To start the second half, the Griffins had their best chance of the night on back-to-back corners, but the shot attempt sailed over the net to keep the Mighty Macs up 1-0.

With 23 minutes remaining, Gwynedd Mercy put another shot on goal off a corner, but sophomore Rachael Gugasian was on the post to steer it away to preserve the one goal lead.

The IU defense held the rest of the way and junior goalie Meghan McCurnin earned her third shutout of the season, and sixth of her career, with three saves.

Immaculata will be the sixth seed entering the CSAC playoffs and they will travel to third-seeded Neumann in the quarterfinals next Monday.  The playoff appearance is the first for the Mighty Macs since 2010 when they lost in the CSAC title game.

NOTES: The six conference wins for the Mighty Macs equals the team record set in 2008, 2009, and 2010 … The seven wins overall are the most for IU since 2011 … The Mighty Macs went a perfect 6-0 at Draper Walsh Stadium in CSAC games this year.
