Immaculata Wins Fifth Straight in Dramatic Fashion

Box Score CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa.- The men's basketball team won in dramatic fashion for the second time in their season-high five game winning streak as senior Nelson Torres (eight points) knocked down a jumper with 2.6 seconds remaining to lift Immaculata (10-8, 9-2 CSAC) over Baptist Bible by a score of 57-56.  The winning streak started with a similar victory over Keystone when Torres hit a lay-up with 2.3 seconds left on the clock.

With Torres struggling from the field (4-11), junior Brandon Smith (16 points, 9 rebounds) and sophomore Xavier Brown (career-high 15 points) picked up the offensive slack in the victory.

The Mighty Macs trailed for virtually the entire second half before the late game offensive push that gave them the lead for good.  Trailing 54-50 with 1:30 remaining in the game, Smith completed a traditional three-point play to shrink the deficit to one point.  Following a Defender offensive foul, Brown made a driving lay-up to give the Mighty Macs only their second lead of the entire second half.

Baptist Bible responded with two free throws from Abe Valentine (14 points) to reclaim the lead with 20 seconds remaining.  That's when Torres stepped in and knocked down the clutch jump shot to continue the Immaculata winning streak, the team's longest since February 7th-February 18th of last season.

In the first half, Immaculata trailed for much of the half, but were only down 29-26 at the break.  Immaculata held a 10-6 advantage with 13 minutes left in the first half before Baptist Bible ripped off a 17-4 run over the next seven minutes of play to take a lead as big as nine points.

The Mighty Macs were finally able to slow the momentum with a run of their own as they closed out the half outscoring the Defenders 12-6.  Smith, Brown, and senior Todd Stokley (seven points, five rebounds) were the scorers during the spurt.

In the second half, Baptist Bible continued to stave off Immaculata from taking the lead, until 6:30 to go in the game when junior Adam Jones (four points) knocked down a jumper to give them a 51-50 lead, but the Defenders grabbed it right back until the frantic final minutes.

Immaculata won despite Baptist Bible shooting 59% from the field and 5-of-8 from three point range.

The Mighty Macs will have a rare Monday off before travelling to Gwynedd-Mercy on Wednesday night for an 8 p.m. contest with the Griffins.
