IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Immaculata University volleyball team opened Colonial States Athletic Conference play on Saturday morning sweeping Cedar Crest College, 3-0, at Alumnae Hall.
Immaculata evens its record at 4-4 overall and 1-0 in the CSAC. Cedar Crest slips to 5-6, 0-3 CSAC.
Immaculata had double-digit kills from Lindsey Silvestro with 12 kills, and Silvestro had four total blocks. Allison Lang chipped in six kills, seven digs and two blocks. Alexandra Okoro recorded six kills, six digs and one block. Tamara Dabady led the squad with five blocks, including three solo blocks, and recorded four kills.
Kathleen Heafner had 28 assists and eight digs for the Mighty Macs. Brooke Schreffler recorded a team-best 15 digs, and Haley Swearer and Brittany Thompson each made eight digs.
The Mighty Macs won eight straight points to begin the first set, and lead 8-1, forcing Cedar Crest to call timeout. The Falcons eventually chipped away at the Mighty Macs' lead, winning seven of eight points to end a run that tied the set at 15-15. The scored was knotted at 18-all, and Immaculata ran off seven straight points to win the first set, 25-18. The final six points of the set came from two Swearer service aces, two kills and one block from Silvestro and one kill and one block from Lang.
The second set began similar to the opener with Immaculata running out to a 7-1 lead. Cedar Crest fought back to make the score 8-6, but the Mighty Macs took control of the set winning seven of eight points making it 15-7. Immaculata continued streak for the 25-16 win.
The third set was a see-saw with seven ties and six lead changes. The two squads exchanged points during the beginning of the set, and it remaining tied at 8-8. Immaculata took its first three-point lead (13-10), and gained momentum from that point on. The Falcons' kept within four points until Alexandra Okoro smacked down a kill to lift the Mighty Macs ahead, 18-13. Immaculata was able to win seven of the final 12 points to earn the sweep, 25-18.
For Cedar Crest, Debra Lobien amassed a double-double with 15 assists and 14 digs. Jessica Lobien had a team-high eight kills and 14 digs, and Nikole Johnson led the Falcons with 22 digs.
Immaculata continues CSAC play on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. traveling to Philadelphia Biblical.
