IMMACULATA, Pa. – Immaculata University defeated Marywood University, 60-56, in Colonial States Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Immaculata improved to 7-10 on the season and 5-5 in league play. Marywood falls to 9-8 overall and 5-5 in the CSAC.
The Mighty Macs placed three players in double figures.
Nelson Torres and
Darnell Malabet registered 16 points apiece to lead Immaculata. Malabet also had six rebounds and four steals, while Torres made five rebounds and handed out four assists.
Brandon Smith was the other Mighty Mac in double digits with 14 points and two blocks.
Mark Davenport also had six rebounds for the Mighty Macs.
In the first half, Immaculata had built a 12-point lead (22-10) with 5:22 left only to see Marywood claw its way back with a 10-0 run to pull within 22-20 with 2:41 remaining. The Mighty Macs buckled down to pull ahead, 27-22, at the half.
The second half began with the Mighty Macs pulling ahead by 11 (40-29) just under six minutes into the stanza. However, a 10-2 spurt by Marywood cut Immaculata's lead to just 42-39 with 10:11 remaining.
The game was a see-saw battle until the finish as the Pacers kept nearly even with the Mighty Macs. Marywood would take a 47-45 lead with 5:58 left thanks to a three pointer from James Lavan, but Immaculata responded almost immediately after a pair of free throws from Malabet.
Marywood held its final lead, 49-48, with 2:37 to play when
Rob Siter went through the lane for a bucket with 2:11 remaining, and made it a three-point play after making his foul shot. The Pacers tied the score for the final time at 51-all with 2:06 after Jacques Robinson made two free throws.
The Mighty Macs held the Pacers scoreless for almost two minutes while they scored seven points all from the foul line to push the lead to 58-51 with 24.2 ticks left. Robinson had a jumper and Brent Keyes sunk a three for Marywood during the final 12 seconds but Immaculata had sealed the win.
The Pacers also had three players in double figures. Tyler Reinhard led the way with 14 points. Keyes and Robinson chipped in 11 points each in the losing effort.
The Mighty Macs play host to Baptist Bible in CSAC play on Monday evening at 8 p.m.
